Bats stay hot, but Golden Bears drop a pair at Newman

Concordia puts up 16 more runs, but drops the season opening series 3-1

WICHITA, Kan. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-3) continued to rake in its season opening four game series at Newman (9-3), but dropped games three (13-11) and four (8-5) to the Jets on Monday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

The Golden Bears are off until their spring trip to RussMatt Central Florida Invitational from March 5 to 11 where they'll play seven Division II opponents in the Orlando area.

On the weekend, sophomore second baseman Bryce Nelson provided the power, with all three of his hits leaving the yard, driving in seven runs and scoring five times in the four game series. Junior infielder Jarod Wandersee led the lineup by hitting .538/.647/.769 with a 1.416 OPS, scoring and driving in six runs including a home run, four walks and no strikeouts while adding a pair of steals.

Overall, Concordia had a .409 team on base percentage and scored 38 runs to Newman's 26 despite dropping the series. CSP also blasted six home runs among its 12 extra base hits and had four starters hit at least .400 over the series.

GAME 1: Newman 13, Concordia-St. Paul 11
Sophomore second baseman Bryce Nelson continued his early season power surge, hitting a pair of late inning home runs, each pulling Concordia within two runs, the same margin the Golden Bears ultimately fell by.

He hit a solo homer in the seventh to cut the score to 11-9, and added a 2-out, 2-run homer in the ninth to make it 13-11. He finished the game 2-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs.

Concordia struck first in the high scoring affair, starting with a first inning RBI single by Jarod Wandersee with Nelson adding an RBI groundout later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Jets pounced in the second with a 6-run inning but Concordia continued to hammer the ball in the series, responding with a 5-run third inning to reclaim a 7-6 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Newman put together two more runs in the bottom of the third, reclaiming an 8-7 lead before a 2-run homer in the fourth extended the home advantage to three, 10-7.

Concordia continued to hit, with Matt Pietsch delivering an RBI double to left in the sixth before Nelson provided the late inning power to try to keep pace with the Jets' hitters.

Four of Concordia's top-five hitters in the lineup all had 2-hit games, and all four also scored two or more runs.

Atop the order, Nick Thimsen went 2-5 with two runs and a double, and Pietsch was 2-3 with two runs, an RBI double, a walk and hit by pitch behind him. Wandersee was 2-4 with two runs, a walk and an RBI from the third spot and Nelson provided the power from the fifth spot in the lineup. Pietsch and Wandersee also swiped a base apiece.

Overall, six players had at least one RBI and six players scored at least one run.

Michael Voss was charged with the loss in relief, working two innings out of the bullpen with a pair of strikeouts, and Christian Morel had three strikeouts among the four outs he recorded in 1.1 innings at the end of the contest, allowing just one hit and one run. Wyatt Rudolf led the staff with 2.2 innings of work before giving way to Morel.

The pitching staff also saw debuts from freshman hurlers Korey Dahlberg who made his first career start and Reese Piontek who worked the fourth inning.

Garrett Vandeventer picked up his second win of the year for Newman, working 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks.

Newman's offense produced seven extra base hits including four home runs with Zack Stewart going 3-4 with a double, homer and five RBIs while Hayden VanDePol going 2-4 with a homer, a steal and two RBIs.

GAME 2:
Concordia once again jumped on the Newman pitchers early, with Nick Thimsen leading off with a single, stealing second and scoring on Jarod Wandersee's RBI single with one out.

But Newman continued to hit on its home field, tying the game in the bottom of the first with Tyler Push's leadoff home run. Push homered again in the second, a two-run homer for a 3-1 lead after two frames.

In the third, Push added a stolen base at the end of a 5-run inning by the Jets that including a two-out bases loaded double and a two-run homer to expand the lead to 8-1.

The Golden Bear bullpen effectively silenced the Jets as Alec Holcomb (1.1), Gavin Rusch (1.0) and Carter Schulte (1.0) combined to work 3.1 scoreless frames, allowing a combined two hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Joey Atkinson took the loss in his first start of the year, striking out three in 2.2 innings. Atkinson also did not issue a walk as CSP's staff had a 6-0 strikeout-walk ratio in the series finale.

Concordia threatened again in the seventh, starting with a leadoff walk to pinch hitter Lamine Diaby-Gassama, followed by a single by Brayden Roybal and a walk by Mitch Klass.

The power was turned back on as center fielder Mason Wolf blasted a grand slam to center, cutting the margin to three, 8-5.

Following the grand slam, reliever Ian Lecki settled down and retired the next three batters, however, preserving the well-pitched win by starter Asher Finke, who allowed one run on four hits across six innings.
