Concordia falls to Winona State in road finale

Ormiston, Skeete and Stensgard combine for 49 points in the loss

WINONA, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (3-24, 2-18 NSIC) closed out their road slate with an 89-67 loss at Winona State (15-9, 11-8 NSIC) on Thursday night at McCown Gymnasium.

The season comes to a close on Saturday night as CSP hosts #15 Upper Iowa on Senior Night at Gangelhoff Center. Senior Jack Stensgard will be honored with a brief on-court ceremony prior to tip-off.

The Warriors took advantage of some hot shooting from beyond the arc and some solid rebounding to drop CSP to 7-52 in the all-time series. WSU finished the night 14-25 (56.0%) from three-point range and 33-58 (56.9%) from the floor overall while maintaining a 36-15 edge in rebounds and a 6-0 edge on the offensive glass. Winona State added a 38-26 advantage in the paint in the win.

Concordia had three different players register at least 15 points on the night as Elijah Ormiston, Marcus Skeete and Stensgard combined for 49 of the team's 67 points. Ormiston paced the squad with 18 points on 6-11 shooting and 2-3 from deep while Skeete tallied 16 points, three assists and two rebounds. Stensgard needed just seven shots to score 15 points as he connected on 5-7 from the floor, 3-4 from three-point range and 2-2 from the line to go along with three assists and two steals.

Jacob Everson chipped in seven points and two boards while Ian Sluice hit a pair of threes for six points. As a team, the Golden Bears hit 9-22 (40.9%) from deep and 25-53 (43.4%) overall from the floor in the loss.

Alec Rosner led all scorers with 24 points as he hit 6-10 from beyond the arc to lead the Warriors.

Following a tie and four lead changes in the opening four and a half minutes of the game, Winona State jumped out to an 18-9 lead with a quick 8-0 run. That lead proved to be short-lived, however, as Concordia rattled off 16 of the next 20 points, including the last 10 in a row, to regain the lead at 25-22. The momentum shifted back the other way from there as 10-2 run in favor of the Warriors pushed them back in front before they closed the half with a 12-3 burst to build a 44-32 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The WSU lead reached 17 with five straight points to start the second half before the Golden Bears started to claw their way back in it. Back-to-back threes from Stensgard and Jacob Everson followed by an Everson layup had it back to single digits before two consecutive Skeete buckets a few minutes later trimmed it all the way down to six at 53-47 with 14:15 to go. The lead floated around that range past the midway point of the half as CSP remained within nine at 71-62 with 7:18 left before three straight threes for Winona State put it out of reach. The Warriors eventually led by as many as 22 at the final margin of 89-67.
