Concordia defeated by Wayne State 62-53

Gietzel picks up double-double as turnovers sink CSP

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (5-3, 2-2 NSIC) was plagued by turnovers Friday night against Wayne State (9-6, 7-4 NSIC), falling 62-53 to the Wildcats at Gangelhoff Center. It was their first home loss for the Bears this season dropping their home record to 3-1.

Junior forward Ally Gietzel recorded her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career, scoring sixteen to go along with 10 rebounds. She also finished with three assists, a block, and a steal.

Leah Dengerud finished with seven points, two steals and an assist. The freshman guard was active down low, pulling down a career high six rebounds. Jadyn Hanson also finished with seven points while adding an assist.

The CSP women's turnover troubles started early, allowing the Wildcats to jump out to a 15-5 lead. The Golden Bears were able to settle down during the final few minutes of the quarter with a Gietzel turnaround jumper starting a Concordia 8-2 run to close out the quarter with Wayne State leading 17-13.

The second quarter was tight as both teams struggled to get shots to fall. The Golden Bears held WSC to just 27.8 percent shooting (5-18), but were held to just 10 shots in the quarter converting four into points. The Bears were scoreless from behind the arc in the first half on six attempts, but hit all four of their shots from the foul line to outscore the Wildcats in the quarter 12-11 and head to the locker room down 28-25.

The start of the second half mirrored the beginning of the game, with the third quarter starting with a big run by Wayne State, with the Wildcats out-scoring the Bears 10-0 through the first 3.5 minutes of the quarter. After an 0-for-5 start to the quarter, a driving layup by junior forward Jalyn Shaw was able to get CSP on the board.

A three pointer by Wayne State's Logan Hughes with 3:17 left in the quarter put WSC up 47-33 and gave the Wildcats a 14 point lead, their largest of the game. Hughes finished as Wayne State's leading scorer, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-13 from the field (69.2 percent) and an impressive 4-of-5 from behind the arc.

The fourth quarter opened with the Golden Bears down 47-38. A short 6-2 run by CSP cut the lead to five, but the comeback would be short lived as the Wildcats answered with a 11-4 run of their own to put the game out of reach. Free throws and a Hanson 3-pointer at the buzzer would bring the final deficit to nine as Wayne State took the win 62-53.

The Golden Bears outrebounded WSC 49-30 and edged them in points in the paint 26-24. Turnovers sunk the Concordia women as they finished with 24 giveaways compared to just 15 for Wayne State. The Wildcats also had a major shooting advantage in the game, going 26-for-55 from the field (40 percent) and were more efficient from three point range, hitting 44 percent of their shots (8-18).

The CSP women are back in action tomorrow, taking on the Augustana Vikings (7-2, 2-2 NSIC) in Gangelhoff Center at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings are coming off a 84-69 loss to #6 Minnesota State.
