LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday night, senior guard
Antwan Kimmons beat the buzzer with an off-balanced jumper to seal a 63-61 victory for Concordia-St. Paul over Augustana.
Trailing 61-58 with 1:37 to play,
Marcus Skeete buried a clutch three to tie the game to set up a dramatic finish. After forcing a tough shot for Augie's Jadan Graves with eight seconds to play,
Jacob Everson pulled down a crucial board before Kimmons streaked down the court and pulled up for a double-clutch fadeaway jumper right in front of the CSP bench to cue the hysteria.
Kimmons matched
Cal Greene with a team-leading 12 points on the night as Kimmons hit 5-9 from the floor while Greene was a perfect 4-4 shooting and 3-3 from the free throw line. Kimmons added five assists and five rebounds while Greene chipped in a pair of boards and a pair of steals in the win.
Marcus Skeete joined the pair in double figures with 11 points on 4-6 shooting to go along with five boards and two assists.
Emad Elniel knocked three three-pointers off the bench to add nine points and five rebounds on the night.
As a team, Concordia shot a scintillating 56.1% (23-41) from the floor and 50.0% (10-20) from deep in the win. The 56.1% was the highest mark for the team since the Golden Bears hit 59.3% in a 93-61 win over Upper Iowa back on Feb. 22, 2020. On the defensive end, CSP held a Vikings squad that was shooting 46.0% on the season to just 37.1% (23-62) on the night as they consistently forced tough shots. Augie hit just 34.5% (10-29) from beyond the arc and went to the free throw line just seven times in the loss.
In addition to the shooting advantage, the Golden Bears held a hefty 29-10 edge in bench scoring as well as advantages of 24-12 in points in the paint and 20-7 in fast break points.
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears enter this weekend's contest with a record of 14-31 against Southwest Minnesota State. After winning just seven of the first 32 meetings in the all-time series, CSP has improved over recent years with seven wins in the past 14 dating back to 2015, including wins in four of the past five contests. In 22 previous meetings in Marshall, Concordia has gone 5-18.
LAST MEETING WITH THE MUSTANGS
Back on Feb. 5, CSP picked up a dramatic last second victory as
Marcus Skeete buried a jumper with 2.0 seconds to play to give the Golden Bears a 61-60 win at Southwest Minnesota State.
CSP head coach
Matt Fletcher, SMSU's career record holder in three-pointers made, picked up a win in his first trip back to his old stomping grounds as the Golden Bears' head coach
Concordia cleared 50.0% shooting for the third time this season as they finished the night at 51.1% (24-47) from the floor and 39.1% (9-23) from three-point range. The Mustangs were even more efficient from the floor at 53.1% (26-49), but they didn't match CSP's success from beyond the arc as they hit just 23.5% (4-17) of their attempts. The Golden Bears added an 11-7 edge in bench scoring in the win.
The trio of Skeete,
Jacob Everson and
Elijah Ormiston combined for 45 of the team's 61 points in the win as Skeete led all scorers with 18 points on 8-14 shooting. Skeete added four assists and two rebounds in the win. Everson was nearly perfect from the floor as he connected on 6-8 shooting and 3-4 from deep to finish with 15 points.
SIOUX FALLS SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and Cougars are meeting for the 28th time in the all-time series this weekend as CSP enters with a 6-21 record against USF. Concordia's best stretch in the series came back in 2015-16 as they won three of four during that span, but the Cougars have won all 10 meetings since then. The Golden Bears have gone 2-10 in 12 contests in Sioux Falls.
LAST MEETING WITH THE COUGARS
In the last meeting on Feb. 4, the Golden Bears nearly erased a 16 point deficit in the second half as they saw a potential game-winning attempt from half court rim out in a 66-64 loss at Sioux Falls.
Trailing by 16 points with 13 minutes to go in the game, the Golden Bears put the clamps on the Cougars on the defensive end to give themselves a pair of chances to tie or take the lead in the final 20 seconds action, but the Cougars held on to make it 10 straight wins in the series.
After seeing the Cougars connect on 46.7% (14-30) from the floor in the first half, the Golden Bears made life tough for USF's shooters in the second half, holding them to just 30.3% (10-33) in the final 20 minutes, including a mark of just 29.4% (5-17) from deep. On the flip side, CSP improved on a 42.9% (12-28) mark before the break to shoot 51.9% (14-27) from the floor and 50.0% (5-10) from three-point range in the second half. Concordia aided their effort with a 28-18 edge in points in the paint.
Jacob Everson finished with nine points on 3-6 shooting while
Caden Hoffman had six points on 2-4 from three-point range to go along with three assists and three boards.
Marcus Skeete chipped in four points, eight rebounds and four assists on the night.
