Strong defense lifts CSP past Jamestown 67-51

Golden Bears hold Jimmies to 14-of-49 from the field

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul (2-2) defeated the University of Jamestown (6-1) 67-51 on Friday night. The Golden Bears were led by their front court trio of Ally Gietzel, Lindsey Becher, and Megan Gamble who poured in 36 of the Bears 67 points and grabbed 22 of the teams 41 rebounds.

The game included five ties and three lead changes that all occurred before the three-minute mark of the first quarter. After trading free throws and layups for the first seven minutes of the game, the Golden Bears took control of the quarter and closed it out on a 11-4 run to lead 20-11..

The Concordia offense exploded in the second quarter, shooting 10-of-19 from the field and 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Three-pointers from Alyssa Daugherty and Jalyn Shaw helped CSP get the quarter started on a 10-5 run through the first 4-plus minutes of the quarter, nearly doubling up the Jimmies 30-16. A converted 3-point play by Gamble and four straight points by Sarah Kuma pushed the Golden Bear lead to 19, their largest advantage of the game, before heading into the locker room at halftime up 47-28.

Jamestown came out of the half with a tough defensive energy and were able to hold the Golden Bears to 3-of-14 (21.4%) from the field for just eight points in the third quarter. The Jimmies also came out of the break hot on offense, starting on a 9-0 run with 3-point baskets from three different players to cut the Concordia lead to 10 with 8:17 left in the quarter. After a timeout by head coach Amanda Johnson, the Golden Bears put on their own defensive clinic, allowing zero points from the field for nearly 10 minutes and forcing 14 straight misses. All four UJ points over that span of time came from the foul line and kept the Golden Bear lead at 14 (55-41) to end the quarter.

The Golden Bears continued their stifling defense in the fourth quarter, forcing five turnovers and only giving up 10 points to the Jimmies. Lindsey Becher helped close out the game for the CSP, going 4-4 from the foul line while adding two layups to finish the game with a team-high 15 points. Leah Dengerud closed out the scoring for CSP, hitting a 3-pointer for her first collegiate points, making the final score 67-51.

For the game, the Bears held the Jimmies to 14-49 from the field (28.6%) and dominated down low by holding UJ to 20.0% shooting from inside the arc (7-35), out rebounding them 41-34 and holding a 26-10 advantage on second chance points.

Ally Gietzel was just behind Becker in scoring, putting up 14 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists. She also had the responsibility of locking down Jamestown star Hannah DeMars, who entered the game averaging 22.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Against the Bears, DeMars finished with just seven points and six rebounds, going 2-of-9 from the field.

Megan Gamble led the team with nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, to go with seven points. Jalyn Shaw and Jadyn Hanson both put eight points on the board, with Shaw added a season-best six rebounds and Hanson dishing out a team-high six assists.
