LAST TIME OUT
Last week, the Golden Bears played a pair of closely contested games as they pulled out a 77-76 win over Bemidji State before falling to Northern Michigan 90-86 in overtime.
On Tuesday night,
Antwan Kimmons scored a go-ahead bucket with 54 seconds to play to give the Concordia a 77-76 win over Bemidji State in non-conference play at Gangelhoff Center. Kimmons scored six of his team-high 21 points in the final 2:13 of play as he knocked down a pair of free throws before getting to the rim to give CSP a 75-74 lead with 1:16 left and again at 77-76 with 0:54 to seal the team's first victory of the season. He finished at 9-18 from the floor to go along with six assists and six boards as well as two steals on the night.
Marcus Skeete and
Jacob Everson gave the Golden Bears three starters in double figures as Skeete finished with 19 points and Everson had 12. Skeete connected on and efficient 7-9 shooting and 3-4 from the floor while pulling down a team-best seven boards and dishing out three assists while Everson was even more efficient at 5-6 shooting and 2-3 from deep.
On Friday, the Golden Bears erased an eight-point second half deficit before leading by as many as four in the final two minutes, but they were unable to close it out in regulation as a last second jumper rimmed out to force an extra session. In overtime,
Antwan Kimmons scored all 12 points for CSP as Concordia led as late as 84-83 with 34 seconds to go, but the Wildcats scored seven points in the final 24 seconds to seal the win.
Kimmons finished with a game-high and career-high 35 points on an efficient 14-25 shooting and 6-8 from the free throw line to go along with four steals, three assists and two boards. His 35 point outburst was the most by a CSP player since Isaiah McKay scored 26 against Arkansas Tech on Nov. 11, 2018.
MINNESOTA STATE SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday's meeting marks the 39th time the two schools have met on the court. In the previous 38 meetings, CSP has gone 6-32 against MSU. The series has been tipped in favor of the Mavericks over the past few years as MSU has won 20 of the last 21 meetings and 16 in a row dating back to the 2011-12 season. On their home court, the Golden Bears have compiled a 4-15 record against the Mavericks and a 2-16 record in Mankato. Their last win in the series came back on Dec. 20, 2014 in a thrilling 75-73 victory in St. Paul.
LAST MEETING WITH THE MAVERICKS
Back on Jan. 2, the Golden Bears pushed the Mavericks in a 92-82 loss in Mankato.
The Golden Bears led by as many as nine in a game that featured five ties and 12 lead changes, but they were unable to turn it into a big road win to start 2022.
CSP took advantage of extra opportunities on the offensive end as they outpaced MSU 14-9 in second chance points on the day. Both teams were efficient from the floor as Concordia shot 49.2% (32-65) overall and 42.9% (12-28) from deep while hitting all six of their free throw attempts. On the other side, Minnesota State hit 53.2% (33-62) from the floor, including 60.0% (12-20) from beyond the arc in the game.
Senior Jack Stensgard put up an efficient line of his own with 16 points on 6-10 shooting and 4-7 from three-point range to go along with three assists.
Jacob Everson and
Reid Patterson each added 10 points as Everson hit 4-7 with three assists while Patterson connected on 4-8 from the floor.
NORTHLAND SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears will face the Lumberjacks for the 47th time in the all-time series as Northland holds a 29-17 edge in the previous 46 meetings. While the two schools have an extensive history, only two of those previous meeting have come in the last 20 years. CSP has picked up wins in five of the last six meetings and hold a record of 7-7 at home against NC.
LAST MEETING WITH THE LUMBERJACKS
Nearly three years ago to the day on Nov. 26, 2019, CSP rode a 28-3 second half run to close out non-conference play with a 75-61 win over Northland at Gangelhoff Center.
Trailing 53-43 with 14:55 left to play, the Golden Bears buckled down to hold the Lumberjacks to just three points on 1-16 shooting with five turnovers over the next 10:29 to turn a 10 point deficit into a 15 point lead.
While the defense was stifling, Noah Kannegiesser carried the load offensively during that stretch as he scored 14 of the team's 28 points during the run. Kannegiesser led all scorers with a career-best 29 points in the game as he hit an efficient 10-17 from the floor, 4-8 from three-point range and 5-5 from the free throw line. He added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.
Jacob Shields and Cody Carlson helped CSP dominate on the glass as Concordia held a 50-30 advantage in rebounds with a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass. Both finished with double-doubles as Shields had 11 points, 12 boards and five blocks while Carlson added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Carlos Barela also reached double figures with 10 points with seven assists and five boards in the game.
In addition to their edge on the glass, the Golden Bears also held a massive 30-14 edge in points in the paint as well as a 20-6 edge in second chance points. CSP also finished the game at 46.8% (29-62) from the field while Northland hit 34.4% (22-64) on the night.
