CSP Baseball announces six players for the 2024 season

The Golden Bears add five incoming freshman and one transfer

ST. PAUL, Minn.- Concordia-St. Paul baseball's head coach Neil Lerner announced the addition of five incoming freshmen and one transfer to the 2024 Golden Bear baseball roster.

The signing class includes Leo Bustos (Mahtomedi, Minn. / Mahtomedi HS / Century), Liam Bystol (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount HS), Will Husemann (Eagan, Minn.  / Eagan HS), Jake McNeil (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville HS), Ian Segna (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Jack Setterlund (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake HS).
 
"It is always a great day when we get to announce a new class of Golden Bears, and today is no different," Lerner stated on national signing day.
 
"The six student-athletes we are adding today have proven to be great baseball players and great people," Lerner commented. "We believe they will be a great fit for our program and will excel on the field, in the classroom and in the CSP community. We look forward to working with them over the next several years and helping them develop as students, baseball players and people."
 
"Coach Dahlke, in his first months with our program jumped right into the recruiting scene and did an amazing job identifying and bringing in extremely talented baseball players and people," Lerner said of his new assistant coach.
 
"Our class is pitcher heavy and this group will provide additional depth to our pitching staff, including some that will have the chance to make an immediate impact on the mound," Lerner added. "Our two position players have the ability to play multiple positions as both are great athletes and very hard workers."
 
"We are very excited to add these six players to our Golden Bear Baseball family," Lerner concluded.  
 

Leo Bustos (RHP, 6-4, 230, SO., Mahtomedi, Minn. / Mahtomedi HS / Century)
Century College
2021-22: Appeared in five and started in three games for the Wood Ducks … pitched nine completed innings and recorded nine strikeouts.
 
Iowa Western Community College
2020: Did not use a year of eligibility.
 
Mahtomedi High School:
Lettered in baseball and participated in basketball for the Zephyrs … named both All-State and All-Conference twice  … named All-Metro three times … named team captain in both his junior and senior campaigns … named team MVP in his junior season … named Rookie of the Year in 2017, and was the first freshman since 1977 to be activated to varsity roster … tallied a 4-3 record with a 1.76 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 43.2 innings pitch during the 2019 season … added a .371/.426/.452 in batting averages, which including three doubles and a homer run in his junior season … helped Mahtomedi to the 2018 State Championship, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team … was a team manager for the 2020 State Championship hockey team.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in business management with a minor in sports management at CSP.
 
Coach Dahlke on Leo Bustos: "Leo is finishing classes at Century College and will join us in January for the spring season. Leo is an extremely hard worker who wants to compete at a college level. Leo has a big frame and shows the ability to throw his fastballs in the upper 80s while commanding the zone. We believe that there is still a lot left in the tank for Leo and are excited to get him on campus and start working with him. We expect Leo to jump into the swing of things and compete for innings right away."

Liam Bystol(LHP, 6-2, 180, Fr., Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount HS)
Rosemount High School:
Lettered in baseball for the Irish … was named a scholar-athlete in spring 2022 … recorded a 4-1 record with a 1.76 ERA, .925 WHIP and  .188 BAA, which included  47 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched during his junior season … with NorthStar Baseball, he notched a 1.60 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and  .194 BAA with 35 strikeouts in 35 innings pitch in summer ball, and a 1.12 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 1.63 BAA with 30 strikeouts in 25 innings in fall ball … helped his team to the sectional finals in 2022.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in English with an emphasis on journalism and professional writing with a minor in communications at CSP … wants to pursue a career in sports journalism upon graduation.
 
Coach Dahlke on Liam Bystol: "What really stood out to us when we were watching Liam pitch was his pitch ability and his confidence in his secondary pitches. We believe that once he gets to CSP and works with our strength and conditioning staff he will begin to fill out his projectable frame and will be able to continue to climb the ladder velocity-wise. We are excited to see the development of Liam come to fruition and see what role he fits into as he continues to progress. Liam is a smart, high-character guy we are thrilled to have him join us at CSP."
 

Will Husemann (3B, 6-3, 200, Fr., Eagan, Minn. / Eagan HS)
Eagan High School:
Earned three letters in both baseball and football for the Wildcats … slashed .325/.400/.533 during his junior season …  recorded 20 hits and 20 RBIs, including nine singles, eight doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs … helped his baseball team to a 2021 section runner-up finish … helped his football team to their first hosted playoff game in a decade.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in criminal justice with a minor in business at CSP … his father was a colligate athlete at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and his older sister plays volleyball at the University of Minnesota.
 
Coach Lerner on Will Husemann: "Will comes from an Eagan High School baseball program that is led by former CSP player and coach Steve Butler. Will is another high-character kid that comes from a great family. Will is a tall, lanky body who shows the ability to play a really solid at third base, and shows gap-to-gap power from the left side. We see Will making some big strides in the weight room and being someone who can man one of the corner infield spots and be a big middle of the batting order for us for several years."
 

Jake McNeil (RHP, 6-1, 170, Fr., St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville HS)
Roseville High School:
Lettered in baseball for the Raiders … named All-Conference … recorded a 4-0 record and a save with a 3.25 ERA and 1.29 WHIP … collected 23 strikeouts and watch just three batters in 28.0 innings pitched … help his team to a 12-6 overall record in 2022.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in exercise science at CSP … father played football and baseball at Hamline University … has an older brother and sister.
 
Coach Dahlke on Jake McNeill: "When we started to recruit Jake, all we heard was how great his work ethic was, along with his ability to throw strikes. When we started to talk to him more and watch him pitch, that became abundantly clear. Jake is another great student that will work his tail off in the classroom, weight room and on the field when he gets to CSP. We believe that there is a lot in the tank that hasn't been tapped yet, and are excited to see the development unfold for Jake. We are excited to have Jake and his family join the CSP family!"
 

Ian Segna (RHP/OF/3B, 5-11, 175, Fr., Lakeville, Minn.  / Lakeville South HS)
Lakeville South High School:
Earned nine total letters in baseball, football and weight lifting … named First Team All-Conference in 2022 … named team captain for his junior season … slashed a .329/.411/.506 with 14 runs, 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases, included six doubles, two home runs and a triple in 2022 … notched a 3-2 record, a 2.19 ERA and a 1.122 WHIP with 26 strikeouts and 12 walks in 38.1 innings pitched … help his team to a 13-12 record and a runner-up finish in the sections.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in business finance at CSP … wants to become a certified public accountant and work in wealth management upon graduation … is a second generation Golden Bears, as his father is a CSP alumnus … has an older sister and younger brother.
 
Coach Dahlke on Ian Segna: "The best way to describe Ian is that he is an all-around great athlete. He is someone that has the potential to be a really good two-way player at our level. He has shown the ability to run his fastball in the mid to upper 80s while commanding the zone at a high level. He also runs really well and shows the ability to hit at a high level. Ian is another student that excels in the classroom and works his tail off in the weight room. We expect that once he starts to work with our strength and conditioning staff and work with our coaching staff, he will continue to develop into a big impact player."
 

Jack Setterlund (2B/SS, 5-10, 165, Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake HS)
White Bear Lake High School:
Earned six total letters in baseball, basketball and football for the Bears … named to the 2022 Section All-Tournament Team … two-year captain in baseball … slashed a .273/.387/.364 in the leadoff spot and had 14 runs, six doubles, four RBIs and three stolen bases … batted .311 and collected three All-Tournament Team awards, along with being named Fall MVP and Defensive Player of the Year for his fall ball team the Blizzard.
 
Personal:
Plans to major in either communication studies or sports management at CSP … wants to work for a professional sports organization upon graduation … his mother, Lisa, played basketball at Concordia and his father played baseball at Dunwoody College … has a younger sister.
 
Coach Lerner on Jack Setterlund: Jack is no stranger to CSP athletics, as his mother (Lisa Raitz '01 BS, '03 MA) played on the CSP women's basketball team our first two years as a D2 program. She later went on to be an assistant basketball coach and work in our athletic department. On the field, Jack is a hard-nosed player with a high baseball IQ.  He is a versatile player that can play all three infield positions.  As a top-of-the-lineup hitter in high school, Jack has the ability to consistently get on base and have quality at-bats.  We are fired up to have him join our program and look forward to aiding in his development over the next several years."
