ST. PAUL, Minn. – The #3 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (15-2, 8-1 NSIC) made it 22 consecutive sets won as they swept Minnesota State (4-13, 3-6 NSIC) on Tuesday night.
The Golden Bears moved to 33-4 in the all-time series with the Mavericks as they won their 15
th in a row against MSU dating back to 2014.
For the fourth match in a row, Concordia held their opponent below .100 hitting as Minnesota State put up a mark of .082 with 30 kills and 21 errors on 110 swings while CSP cleared .300 hitting for the seventh straight match at .342 with 46 kills and seven errors on 114 attempts.
CSP added a significant edge in blocks at 8.0-2.0 as well as a 51-47 edge in digs in the winning effort while MSU held an 8-5 advantage in service aces on the night.
Jasmine Mulvihill collected her sixth double-double of the season as she led the team with 13 kills, 11 digs and an ace while hitting .323.
Kennedy Brady was nearly perfect offensively as she tallied nine kills with no errors on 12 swings for a .750 hitting percentage while leading the way with five blocks.
Emma Schmidt just missed a double-double with nine kills, nine digs and four blocks in a full stat line while
Payton Stier paced all players with 13 digs in the win.
Teagan Starkey assisted on 37 of the team's 46 kills to go along with six digs in the match.
Sophie Tietz filled the stat sheet for Minnesota State as she finished with 11 digs, six kills and five aces in the loss.
Concordia built an early advantage in the first set with seven of the first 10 points in the first set before MSU stormed back with nine of the next 13 to take a 12-11 lead. CSP quickly turned it around with four of the next five as they would not trail the rest of the way. With the score even at 22-22, the Golden Bears scored three in a row to take the set 25-22.
After the two teams split the first six points, the Golden Bears took control with the next seven points in a row. The Mavericks spent much of the rest of the set clawing their way back in it before they eventually rattled off a 4-0 run to jump ahead 21-20. Those proved to be their final four points of the set as CSP rattled off five consecutive points to win the set 25-21.
That momentum carried over into the third set as Concordia scored five of the first six and 10 of the first 13 to take the lead for good. A 9-1 run later in the set extended the lead all the way to 15 at 23-8 before CSP closed it out at the same margin at 25-10.
Concordia will look to keep their winning streak intact on the road this weekend as they travel to Bemidji State on Friday and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
