WINONA, Minn. – The #3 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (21-2, 14-1 NSIC) rolled to their 14
th win in a row as they took down Winona State (12-10, 8-7 NSIC) in three sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) on the road on Saturday night.
CSP improved to 35-11 in the all-time series and 13-6 in Winona as they won their 33
rd in the past 37 meetings. Concordia's 14
th straight win is their longest since finishing off the 2016 season with 19 in a row.
The Golden Bears limited the WSU attack as they held the Warriors to .073 hitting with 30 kills and 22 errors on 109 attempts. On the offensive end, Concordia collected 46 kills with 12 errors on their 117 swings for a mark of .291. CSP added a 9.0-3.0 edge in blocks as well as a 3-2 edge in aces in the victory.
Teagan Starkey spread the ball around as she tallied 44 assists to go along with four blocks with four different hitters registering at least nine kills in the win.
Sophia Andersen led the way with 11 kills while
Emma Schmidt and
Jasmine Mulvihill finished with 10 apiece. Schmidt added 11 digs for her second straight double-double while Mulvihill chipped in eight digs, two aces and two blocks.
Katie Mattson needed just 14 attempts to collect nine kills for a .571 hitting percentage while she added five blocks on the night.
Ellie Sieling led all players with 18 digs for the second match in a row as she fell one shy of her career-best.
Holding an early 5-4 advantage in the opening set, CSP rattled off seven of the next eight to build a comfortable cushion at 12-5. The lead grew to as many as eight at 15-7 before Winona State clawed their way to back to within two at 19-17 with 10 of the next 14 points. After the two teams traded the next two points, the Golden Bears strung together a 5-1 burst to win the set 25-19.
Concordia quickly built a 9-4 lead in the second set before WSU pulled it back to within one with four points in a row. It was all CSP from there as they scored the next five points and 11 of the next 13 to double up the Warriors at 20-10. The Golden Bears continued from their as they took the set 25-14 to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
The momentum carried over into the third set as the Golden Bears scored nine consecutive points to take the lead for good at 12-3. The lead remained six or more the rest of the way as CSP closed out the sweep with a 25-18 set win.
The Golden Bears return home on Tuesday night as they play host to Minnesota State.
