MOORHEAD, Minn. – The #6 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (10-2, 4-0 NSIC) picked up their fourth straight sweep to start the conference season as they took all three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) at MSU Moorhead (1-11, 1-3 NSIC) on Friday night.
The Golden Bears grabbed their 17
th straight win and 32
nd in the past 33 meetings to improve to 32-8 in the all-time series.
CSP controlled nearly every aspect of play as they held a 47-28 advantage in kills, a 60-38 advantage in digs and a 7-5 advantage in blocks while edging the Dragons in hitting percentage at .265 to .089.
Tori Hanson and
Makenna Berger each reached double digits in digs as Hanson led all players with 14 digs and Berger chipped in 11. Berger added five kills, two aces and two blocks in the win.
Ellie Veldman fell a dig shy of a double-double with 35 assists, nine digs and three blocks.
Jasmine Mulvihill made it four straight matches with at least 14 kills as she continued her dominant start to the NSIC season.
Kora Kritzberger added an extremely efficient nine kills on 12 swings with no errors for a .750 hitting percentage as she also added three digs and two blocks.
Kennedy Brady and Sophia Anderson added seven kills apiece.
Sara Petrbok paced the Dragons with 13 digs while Amanda Carlson led the team with nine kills in the loss.
After an even start to begin the first set, the Golden Bears found themselves playing from behind as MSUM rattled off five points in a row to take a 9-5 lead. Concordia responded with five of the next six to even the score at 10-10 before the Dragons regained the lead with three in a row. They held that lead until the 22-18 mark, but CSP exploded with a 7-1 run to close out a 25-23 set win.
It was more of the same in the second set as MSU Moorhead held a slim lead for much of the early portion before a 5-0 run turned a 14-13 deficit into an 18-14 lead for the Golden Bears. That CSP lead would not shrink below three the rest of the way as they took the set 25-19.
A big run in the middle of the third set proved to be the difference as Concordia rattled off six in a row and 11 of 13 to build a 19-10 advantage. The lead grew to as many as 10 at 23-13 before a last push for the Dragons made it a bit closer at the final margin of 25-18.
The Golden Bears continue their road swing tomorrow as they take on Northern State at 2 p.m.
