ST. PAUL, Minn. – The fourth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (8-2, 2-0 NSIC) grabbed their second sweep of the weekend as they took down the University of Mary (2-8, 0-2 NSIC) in three sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears made it 21 straight wins in the all-time series with the Marauders as they grabbed their 19
th sweep in 21 meetings.
It was another strong all-around performance as Concordia controlled nearly every aspect of play in the victory. CSP held a 48-19 edge in kills, a 9.0-3.0 edge in blocks and a 43-32 edge in digs while out-hitting the Marauders .351-.024 on the day. The match marked the fifth time the team surpassed the .300 mark hitting and third time they held their opponents below .100 on the season.
Concordia had four hitters collect at least eight kills on the day, led by 14 from
Jasmine Mulvihill, while
Katie Mattson and
Sophia Andersen had nine kills apiece in addition to eight for
Makenna Berger. Mulvihill hit .440 while tallying five digs, three aces and a pair of blocks while Mattson paced the squad with four blocks and an efficient .615 hitting percentage. Berger chipped in nine digs as well.
Tori Hanson led the Golden Bears with 11 digs while
Ellie Veldman picked up 25 assists and seven digs.
Teagan Starkey added 14 assists and three digs in her one set of action.
Nehkyah Ellis and Kennedy Drewis paced the Marauders with five kills while Kaia Sueker had nine digs in the loss.
CSP opened the match with eight of the first 10 points as they led virtually from wire-to-wire in the opening set. The margin sat at four at 12-8 before a 6-2 run pushed it out to 18-10. UMary grabbed the next two points before six straight points gave the Golden Bears their largest lead of the set at 24-12. The Marauders survived a pair of set points before Concordia finished it off at 25-14.
It was more of the same in set two as an early 9-0 run gave the Golden Bears a quick 11-2 edge. Another 4-0 run a few points later extended the lead to double figures at 15-4 before UMary started to slow the tide. The two teams traded points throughout the rest of the set as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 set win.
Concordia kicked things off with the first three points and six of the first seven in the third set as they led from start to finish. A 6-0 run in the middle stages of the set turned a 15-8 lead into 21-8 lead, matching the largest lead of the day. The Marauders rebounded late with six straight points on match point before CSP finished off the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third.
The Golden Bears have a quick turnaround with a mid-week home match against Upper Iowa on Wednesday before hitting the road for four straight matches.
