Golden Bears split with Cougars on senior day

Kaestner pitched a shutout in game one before CSP fell to USF in game two

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Golden Bear softball team (22-18, 16-10 NSIC) hosted the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) (21-20, 15-12 NSIC) on senior day at Carlander Field. The Golden Bears had an impressive pitching performance in game one, and the Cougars were able to put some runs up early and held CSP to just two runs in game two.

Concordia will host Southwest Minnesota State (25-17, 16-12 NSIC) for their final home series of the 2021 season.

Grace Beseman hit her 10th and 11th home runs of the season in the doubleheader on Saturday. Hanna Mortenson hit her third home run of the season in game two and Kali Kaestner pitched her 11th complete game of the season in game one.

GAME ONE: Concordia-St. Paul 3, Sioux Falls 0
After a quick inning and a half, CSP was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. After a quick first out, Hanna Mortenson sent a shot over the left field wall for her third home run of the season to give Concordia a 1-0 lead over the Cougars.

Sioux Falls threatened in the top of the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with no one out when they collected two straight hits and a walk. Kali Kaestner was able to work her out of trouble with a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at home, a fly out to left and a ground ball to second base to get herself out of the bases loaded jam.

The Golden Bears would take advantage of that when they plated another run in the bottom of the fifth. Meagan Bliese hit a one out single to left, she then stole second after a fly out and Kris McIntyre drove her in with an RBI single to give CSP a 2-0 lead.

Concordia would tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Grace Beseman led off with a solo home run to right center field, her team leading 10th of the season and an insurance run for the Golden Bears to make it a 3-0 game late.

That would be all that Kali Kaestner would need as she went all seven, struck out six while allowing only four hits and one walk for her team leading 11th win of the season.

Grace Beseman and Kris McIntyre each went 2-3 with an RBI, Beseman also scored a run in this game. Clara Heislen went 1-3, Hanna Mortenson went 1-3 with a run scored, and Meagan Bliese also went 1-3 with a run scored.

GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 2, Sioux Falls 4
The Cougars would plate all four of their runs in the first three innings of the game. They scored two in the top of the first inning when Rachel Klassen hit a one out single through the left side, Kennedy Thomas then singled to left field, she advanced to second on an error by the left fielder, which allowed Klassen to move to third. After a strikeout, Damaris Cuevas singled through the right side, scoring both runners and giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Kaitlyn VanDerZwaag led off with a towering solo home run to left center field to give USF a 3-0 lead. The Cougars would add one more run in the top of the third inning. Kennedy Thomas led off with a single to right center, she then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mika Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Thomas to third and Damaris Cuevas doubled to left center, scoring Thomas to make it 4-0, it was Cuevas's third RBI of the game.

Concordia would add a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Amanda Parsons reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, Hanna Mortenson singled through the right side, advancing Parsons to second. Hannah Mihalik came through with a single to center to load the bases, Jacey Defries pinch hit for Griffin and she worked a walk to score Parsons and get CSP on the board, 4-1.

The Golden Bears plated one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Grace Beseman hit a moonshot solo home run down the left field line to make it 4-2. That would be all Concordia could produce as the Cougars held on to win 4-2.

Bryanna Olson suffered the loss as she is now 5-7 on the season, she struck out four batters in 2.1 innings of work. Aryka Knoche was good out of the pen as she went 4.2 innings of work, allowing only two hits and three strikeouts. Hanna Cress earned the win for the Cougars as she is now 10-10 on the season and Kennedy Thomas earned her first save of the season.

Grace Beseman went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Hanna Mortenson went 2-3, Hannah Mihalik went 1-3 and Meagan Bliese went 1-2.
