MANKATO, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (12-21, 8-19 NSIC) dropped their final road game of the season at #13 Minnesota State (28-6, 24-5 NSIC) by a score of 18-4 in seven innings on Monday afternoon.
The Mavericks used a big 11 run second inning to pull away early as they cruised to a weekend sweep at Bowyer Field.
On a day in which 25 different CSP players entered the game, CSP's seven hits came from seven different players. Three of those hits came from pinch hitters, including a
JT Hoffmann solo home run, as
Mason Wolf and
Brayden Roybal also came off the bench to deliver hits.
Patrick Bordewick delivered a double and a run scored while
Ted Elsner,
Ryan Christopher and
Jarod Wandersee all chipped in singles as well.
Cody Maier added a walk, a run scored and an RBI.
Michael Voss (0-3) got the start and took the loss as he allowed four earned runs over 1.2 innings while striking out two and walking none.
Ryan Fering provided 2.0 solid innings of relief as he allowed just one hit in a pair of scoreless frames.
Minnesota State jumped out to an early lead with a pair of homers in the first inning before the Golden Bears answered with a run of their own in the top of the second on a Maier RBI groundout.
MSU put things out of reach in their half of the second as they scored 11 runs with six hits to build a 14-1 advantage after two. Ty Denzer delivered the biggest blow with a bases clearing double while Jake Waletich and Joey Werner added two-run singles in the inning.
Concordia's best inning at the plate came in the fourth as four straight hitters reached safely with two outs. Maier got things started with a walk before Roybal extended the inning with a single. Elsner and Wolf followed with back-to-back RBI singles to trim the deficit to 15-3.
Hoffmann rounded out the scoring for CSP with a solo shot in the fifth, his second of the season, before the Mavericks added a few late runs to secure the 18-4 win.
Concordia returns home for the final week of the regular season as they host Winona State on Wednesday and Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday.
