LAST TIME OUT
Over the weekend, the Golden Bears split with SMSU on Friday before dropping a heartbreaker to the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
Concordia's game two win on Saturday was one to remember as the team scored 20 runs on 20 hits in a 20-6 seven-inning win.
While the Golden Bear bats had been quiet over recent games, they broke out in a big way in game two against the Mustangs as CSP put up their largest offensive output since a wild 23-15 win against Wayne State back on Mar. 5, 2019 and their largest output in play since a 23-9 win at Bemidji State all the way back on April 19, 2014.
The Golden Bears fell one home run short of the DII-era program record set back on April 8, 2004 at UMD as they slugged five as a team in the game while their 39 total bases ranked seventh.
A staggering eight CSP hitters registered multi-hit games while seven scored at least twice and five drove in two or more in the game in a balanced attack.
The top run producer in the game was third baseman
Jarod Wandersee as the junior launched a grand slam and a two-run homer to set career bests with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored.
Patrick Bordewick reached safely all five times up as he went 4-4 with a homer, a walk, four runs scored and a pair of RBIs, giving him three career four-hit games.
Ryan Christopher and
Nick Thimsen joined in the long ball fun as Christopher drove in three and scored three while going 3-5 with a homer and Thimen went 2-4 with a homer, a walk and a pair of runs.
Jaden Werner added the first two hits of his young career as he 2-5 with three RBIs while
Matt Pietsch went 2-5 with a double and three runs scored.
Jack Young added a 2-4 performance with two runs and two RBIs while
Justin McGuigan also chipped in a pair of hits.
MINOT SERIES HISTORY
Concordia and Minot State enter the series with just 15 previous meetings with the Golden Bears holding a slight edge at 8-7. All 15 meetings have come since the Beavers joined the NSIC in the 2012-13 academic year with the two teams splitting the eight previous league games. This will be just CSP's second trip to Minot as they previously claimed a doubleheader sweep there back on April 12, 2014.
LAST MEETING WITH THE BEAVERS
In a doubleheader played at Bellevue West High School on March 21, 2019, the Golden Bears came from behind late to claim a split with Minot State.
The Golden Bears were held scoreless for the first 12 innings of the day, but came through when it mattered with four late runs in the second game of the day to pick up a win.
Concordia found themselves in an early hole again in the second contest as Minot scored one in the second and held a 1-0 lead into the sixth, but back-to-back two-run innings gave CSP the decisive advantage.
Six of the team's eight hits came in the sixth and seventh as the Golden Bears took advantage of their opportunities. Seven of the nine starters registered at least a hit in the game as
Roch Whittaker was the lone Concordia with two hits in the game.
Ryan Christopher, the team's starting pitcher, continued to drive in runs at an impressive clip at the plate as he collected two of the team's three RBIs while
Drew Sannes picked up the other RBI with a run-scoring triple.
UMC SERIES HISTORY
CSP will look to continue their dominance of UMC in the all-time series as they have gone 46-9 in 55 previous meetings. The Golden Bears had been especially dominant in recent years with 43 wins in a row against the Golden Eagles dating back to the 2003 season before the Golden Eagles completed a three-game sweep of CSP in 2019. Concordia has rattled off 16 wins in 18 games in Crookston.
LAST MEETING WITH THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Back on March 24-25, 2019 at Veteran Field in Minnetonka, the Golden Eagles claimed a three-game sweep over the Golden Bears.
The Golden Eagles followed the same recipe for success in all three games as they jumped ahead early before holding off CSP to claim the win. UMC picked up just their second series win ever against the Golden Bears and first since 2001 as they dropped Concordia to 46-9 in 55 meetings all-time.
In the final game of the series, a 4-3 loss for CSP, it was a game of missed opportunities for both teams as the Golden Bears stranded 10 runners while the Golden Eagles left 13 on base. CSP did manage to out-hit UMC in the game as they tallied 11 hits compared to 10 for Minnesota Crookston.
It was the middle of the CSP order that did most of the damage as the 4-5-6 hitters combined to go 7-13 (.538).
Cole Kirchoff led the way with a three-hit day, including an RBI triple, while
Roch Whittaker and
Ryan Christopher added two hits apiece.
