SCSU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and the Huskies will meet for the 53
rd and 54
th times in the all-time series as CSP has gone 16-35-1 in the previous 52 meetings. In the first 16 contests between the two schools from 2002-10, Concordia held a slight 8-7-1 advantage, but the scales have been tilted in St. Cloud State's favor since then. Since the Golden Bears took two of the first three in the 2017 season series, the Huskies have taken nine of 12. On their home field, CSP has compiled a 2-9-1 record while they have gone 8-25 in NSIC contests.
LAST MEETING WITH THE HUSKIES
Back on Feb. 26, 2020, CSP bounced back from a 7-0 game one loss to win game two 7-6 in walk-off fashion to give head coach
Neil Lerner his first win as head coach against the Huskies at US Bank Stadium.
In the second game of the day after seeing an early 2-0 lead erased in the middle innings, the Golden Bears clawed their way back late with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to walk off the Huskies and pick up their first win of the season.
The middle of the order played a big role as
Ryan Christopher and
Patrick Bordewick combined for five hits and drove in three while
Matt Pietsch delivered a game-tying double and also drew a walk. Christopher, the game's starting pitcher, finished 2-4 with a double and a triple with two runs scored and two driven in while Bordewick reached safely four times, contributing three hits and a pair of runs in the game.
SMSU SERIES HISTORY
Against one of CSP's most familiar opponents, the Golden Bears have compiled a 36-24 record in 60 previous meetings. Concordia has been even more dominant in recent seasons as they have won 15 of the last 20 meetings since 2016, including seven in a row to start that run. Just six of the previous 60 meetings have come in Marshall as SMSU holds a 4-2 edge in those meetings.
LAST MEETING WITH THE MUSTANGS
In their final game before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the 2020 season to a halt, Concordia blanked SMSU 5-0 on March 9, 2020.
Blake Stelzer delivered a dominant outing, pairing up with
Shane Benson to collect the team's second shutout of the week.
Stelzer shut down the Mustangs for 8.0 innings as he limited them to just four hits and a walk while striking out 10 in the win. Benson added a scoreless ninth as he registered a strikeout before grabbing a game-ending double play.
The offense took advantage of their opportunities as they turned eight hits into five runs in the win. Young and Pietsch each made it three straight two-hit games as Young went 2-4 with two runs scored while Pietsch went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
Ryan Bastyr added a big two-run double while Soeffker finished 1-1 with a walk and an RBI.
