FAYETTE, Iowa – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (9-3, 7-3 NSIC) completed the weekend sweep of the Upper Iowa Peacocks (1-11, 0-10 NSIC) in a 77-47 victory on Sunday afternoon behind a career-high 20 points from sophomore forward
Sydney Zgutowicz.
The Peacocks opened the scoring in the first quarter on a three pointer from Katie Tornstrom. The Bears quickly responded on the other end of the court with a layup from
Sydney Zgutowicz. CSP kept their feet on the gas from there, sparking a 12-0 run to take an early double-digit lead. The first quarter closed with Concordia leading 22-10.
The Golden Bear defense was up to the challenge again in the second frame, holding the Peacocks to just 9 points on 3-7 shooting from the field. CSP capitalized on UIU's turnover issues for the second straight game, scoring 17 points off turnovers in the first half alone. The battle in the paint was another area dominated by the Bears in the first half as they outscored Upper Iowa 26-4.
The Concordia offense exploded in the third, scoring 27 points on 9-18 shooting in the quarter. The Bears also played well, holding the Peacocks to 15 points to extend the lead to 28 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was much tighter than the third, but CSP still managed to outscore the Peacocks 15-13 to cap off the 30-point victory.
Despite the lopsided score, the Peacocks were the first team to shoot 40% or more from the field against the Bears. Upper Iowa shot 18-45 (40.0%) while the CSP shot 28-63 (44.4%) in the game. The Golden Bears outrebounded the Peacocks again by a margin of 43-22.
Zgutowicz finished on top of the score sheet for the Bears once again, notching a career-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward
Lindsey Becher also had another strong day, putting up 12 points and four steals for CSP.
Sarah Kuma gave the Golden Bears a solid performance off the bench with 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals.
Brooke Evenson was the leading scorer for Upper Iowa, recording 10 points and two steals. Cassidy Pagel and Savannah Domeyer both finished with six points in the game for the Peacocks.
