MANKATO, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul softball (1-3) was swept in their final day of the Minnesota State Dome Tournament in Mankato, Minnesota. Lewis University (2-2) brought their bats for the morning doubleheader, defeating CSP 13-5 in game one and then 13-4 in game one.
The Golden Bears will have a few weeks off until their next round of non-conference matchups down in Emporia, Kansas for the Emporia State University Softball Classic. Concordia will play five games during the weekend of March 5
th-7
th.
Although the Flyers put up the impressive offensive numbers during the doubleheader, CSP did have some standouts themselves in their lineup.
Clara Heislen once again helped spark CSP's offense going a combined 2-6, driving in three runs, hitting her first homerun of the season, and scoring a run in the doubleheader.
Grace Beseman went 3-5 on the day, driving in two-runs with her first homerun of the season and also scoring two runs.
Aryka Knoche also had a good day at the plate, going a combined 3-5 while driving in a run on the day.
GAME ONE: Concordia-St. Paul 5, Lewis University 13
After a scoreless first inning, the Flyers struck first in the second inning when they put up two runs. Small ball approach and a throwing error by the Golden Bears helped Lewis push across two unearned runs against
Bryanna Olson.
The Golden Bears would get on the board in the top of the third inning when
Clara Heislen crushed a homerun to left center, her first of the season to make it a 2-1 game. The Flyers would answer in the bottom of the third inning, pushing across three runs to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Concordia clapped back in 4
th inning when
Taylor Griffin singled to right center with the bases loaded, scoring
Grace Beseman. Sophomore
Ani Bell followed up with a single to left center, scoring
Amanda Parsons to make it a 5-3 game.
Lewis University provided three more runs in the bottom of the 4
th inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Swartzentrub to make it an 8-3 game.
Grace Beseman helped chip away at the Flyers lead by smacking a two-run homerun in the 5
th inning for a score of 8-5, it was her first of the season.
The Flyers would score five more runs in the 6
th inning to make it a score of 13-5. Since the eight-run rule was in place for this tournament, the Flyers defeated the Golden Bears 13-5 in sixth innings.
Bryanna Olson made her first start of the season for Concordia, she went 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, three earned runs and three strikeouts and suffering the loss, she moved to 1-1 on the season.
Kali Kaestner came into the game in relief, she went two innings, gave up seven hits, six runs and struck out one batter. The Flyers had three pitchers pitch in this game, Anna Gustafson made the start going 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. Katie David picked up the win for the Flyers, she pitched two innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four, she picked up the win and is now 1-1 on the season.
Clara Heislen was 1-3, with a homerun, one RBI and one run scored.
Kris McIntyre went 1-4 with a run scored,
Grace Beseman was 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Amanda Parsons and
Aryka Knoche both went 2-3 in the game, Parsons scored one run, and
Taylor Griffin and
Ani Bell each went 1-3, both driving in a run.
GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 4, Lewis University 13
It was another high scoring game, but the Golden Bears were able to have their first early lead of the season when they scored two early runs in the first and second innings.
Aryka Knoche singled up the middle, scoring
Kris McIntyre in the first inning to make it 1-0 CSP.
Hanna Mortenson shot a bomb to dead centerfield in the second inning to make it a 2-0 Golden Bear lead.
The Flyers would eventually answer in the third inning when Swartzentrub slapped a two-run single to tie the game 2-2. Lewis would take the lead in the fourth inning when they produced five runs to make it a 7-2 game.
Concordia would make things interesting in the fourth inning as
Clara Heislen doubled down the left field line, scoring
Emma Adamek and
Taylor Griffin to make it a three-run game.
The Golden Bear rally fell short when the Flyers scored five runs in the fifth inning. The Flyer's big inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Kavalauskas. Due to the eight-run rule, the game was over after the fifth inning securing the Flyers 13-4 win over the Golden Bears.
Freshman
Mackenzie Perry made her collegiate debut in the circle for Concordia. She went four innings, faced 24 batters, produced nine ground ball outs and three fly outs. She allowed nine hits and seven runs and suffered her first loss of the season.
Aryka Knoche pitched in an inning of relief, she faced nine batters, allowed four hits and six runs, three earned.
Katie David earned the victory for the Flyers, she went four innings, allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out seven batters, she moved to 2-1 on the season. Payton Wuske pitched in one inning of relief, allowing two baserunners but no hits and no runs.
Clara Heislen went 1-3 with two RBI's in the game.
Aryka Knoche and
Hanna Mortenson each went 1-2 while both driving in a run. And
Grace Beseman,
Taylor Griffin,
Emma Adamek, and
Meagan Bliese all collected a hit in the game as well.
