Concordia holds off Upper Iowa on the road

Golden Bears use 16-0 first quarter run to build lead, then hold off UIU comeback late

FAYETTE, Iowa - Concordia-St. Paul (6-1, 2-1 NSIC) picked up its first Northern Sun road win 70-61 at Upper Iowa (1-6, 0-3 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears trailed early before a 16-0 run gave them a 19-9 lead at the first quarter break. Concordia built its lead as large as 15 (31-15) midway through the second quarter and led by 14 at the half.

Senior Riley Wheatcraft secured a steal and finished on the break and canned a three-pointer on the next possession to spark the run. She finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

In doing so, Concordia held Upper Iowa to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor while hitting 44.8 percent on the offensive side.

In the third quarter, Upper Iowa caught fire, hitting 11-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three-point range to tie the game at 51 late in the quarter. Wheatcraft snapped the Peacock hot streak with a free throw and a layup to give Concordia a three-point lead (54-51) at the end of the third quarter.

It was the start of a 6-0 scoring run, as Wheatcraft assisted on a Lindsey Becher bucket to start the fourth quarter, and made another free throw for a 57-51 lead.

Becher had a strong day for Concordia, finishing with a team-high 14 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists.

Although Concordia didn't trail the rest of the way, they had to fend off a few Peacock threats, as Upper Iowa closed the margin to one point three more times: 57-56, 59-58 and the final time at 61-60 with 2:41 to play.

With under two minutes left, Becher made a pair of free throws, Wheatcraft made three free throws in a 40 second span to the under 1-minute mark and Jadyn Hanson made four free throws late to seal the win while the defense held the Peacocks to one point in the final two and a half minutes-plus.

Concordia's bench provided an offensive boost, as Sydney Schultz and Megan Gamble combined to shoot 6-11 from the floor with Schultz scoring 10 points and Gamble adding nine.

On the day, the Golden Bears shot 37.5 percent (21-56) from the field and 75.8 percent from the foul line, where they spent plenty of the afternoon with 33 attempts (25-33).

They held Upper Iowa to 37.3 percent (22-59) shooting, once again keeping an opponent under the 40 percent mark from the floor.

Lydia Haack scored a game-high 24 points on 9-17 shooting for Upper Iowa and Jessica Musgrave had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bears remain on the road in league play next Friday at Wayne State and Saturday at Augustana, with both games scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
