ST. PAUL, Minn. – The 10
th-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (20-7, 14-4 NSIC) closed out their home slate with a sweep (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) of MSU Moorhead (5-21, 5-13 NSIC) on Saturday night on Senior Night at Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears improved to 33-8 all-time against MSU Moorhead as they won their 18
th in a row in the series and moved to 17-3 on their home court.
Concordia tallied an impressive 11 aces on the night while also claiming a 47-34 edge in kills and a 60-47 edge in digs in the victory. CSP also finished with a .241-.204 advantage in hitting percentage as well to aid the effort.
Concordia's 47 kills were spread evenly as four different players registered in double figures on the night.
Emma Schmidt fill the stat sheet with 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage while adding 11 digs and four aces to collect her seventh double-double on the year.
Jasmine Mulvihilll added a double-double of her own, also her seventh, with a team-best 12 kills as well as 10 digs and a pair of aces in the win.
Kennedy Brady chipped in 11 kills, three aces, two blocks and two digs while
Sophia Andersen finished with 10 kills and three digs.
Teagan Starkey and
Ellie Veldman split setting duties with 23 assists for Starkey and 19 for Veldman.
CSP also had four in double figures in digs as
Ellianna Wiertsema and
Payton Stier joined Schmidt and Mulvihill. Wiertsema led all players with 17 digs while Stier chipped in 11.
Brook Walthall paced the Dragons with 15 digs while Kelly Klees added 10 in the loss.
After the two teams split the first six points of the night, CSP rattled off a 9-2 run to take a 12-5 lead in the opening set. CSP still held a seven point lead at 18-11 before a 4-0 run for the Dragons trimmed the lead to 18-15. The Golden Bears held the Dragons to three points the rest of the set as they took the set 25-18.
Concordia jumped out to an 8-3 run in set two following a 6-0 run before MSUM pulled back within one at 8-7. The Golden Bears responded with another 5-0 burst to build a 13-7 edge to give them a comfortable lead until the later stages. The Golden Bears forced set point at 24-17, but the Dragons kept the set alive with six straight points to pull within a point. Mulvihill broke the streak with a kill to close out the set 25-23.
MSU Moorhead claimed an early 9-5 lead in the third set and maintained a four point edge at 11-7 before Concordia strung together a 5-0 to take a 12-11. MSUM regained the lead with four straight points to make it 15-12 and still held that advantage at 17-14, but CSP closed out the sweep with an 11-2 run to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Concordia closes out the regular season next weekend as they travel to UMary on Friday and Minot State on Saturday.
