DENVER, Colo. – Despite a career-best 33 points from
Marcus Skeete, the Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (1-5) fell to Regis (4-1) by a score of 83-64 on Friday afternoon.
Skeete became the first CSP player to surpass the 30 point threshold since
Jordan Coblin scored 31 on Dec. 13, 2019 against Upper Iowa while his 33 points were the most since Bryndan Matthews scored 34 points in a road win at Winona State on Feb. 22, 2019. The freshman forward connected on 13-18 from the field, 4-6 from three-point range and 3-4 from the free throw line while also collecting seven rebounds and four assists.
Skeete was joined by
Reid Patterson in double figures as Patterson finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists while shooting 4-10.
Jacob Everson followed close behind with nine points on 3-6 shooting in addition to four rebounds while
Roy Grigsby had six points, three rebounds and two assists.
As a team, Concordia hit 46.2% (24-52) from the field while Regis shot 50.8% (30-59) overall and 46.2% (6-13) from beyond the arc in the win. The Golden Bears won the battle on the glass with a 36-31 rebounding edge, including a 9-7 edge on the offensive glass, to finish with a 14-5 advantage in second chance points. The Rangers more than made up for it with a massive 35-14 edge in points off turnovers as they forced 27 CSP turnovers on the day.
Brian Dawson led Regis with 26 points, four rebounds and three steals on 11-20 shooting in the victory.
Regis jumped out to an early lead as they held CSP without a field goal for the first 3:12 to build an 8-1 advantage, but the Golden Bears turned the momentum later on in the half. With the Rangers still leading by six at 16-10 at the 12:00 mark, Concordia rattled off an extended 22-6 run to build their largest lead of the night at 32-22 with 5:17 to go before the break. RU answered right back with a 14-0 run to regain the lead for good at 36-32 less than three minutes later. Regis took a 39-36 lead into the locker room as the two teams traded buckets the rest of the half.
The Golden Bears remained within two points early in the second half at 41-39, but it was all Regis from there. Over the next 13 minutes, the Rangers outscored Concordia 34-7 to build their largest lead of the game at 75-46 with 5:29 to play. CSP finished the game strong, however, as they picked up 10 of the last 12 points to bring it to a final score of 83-64.
Concordia is back in action tomorrow night as they take on MSU Denver on the road at 7 p.m.
