ST. PAUL, Minn. – The fourth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball (13-3) saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end as they fell to ninth-ranked Winona State (15-1) in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 18-25) in non-conference play on Tuesday night at Gangelhoff Center.
The Warriors picked up just their second win in 22 trips to St. Paul as the Golden Bears fell to 34-10 in the all-time series.
While both teams finished with similar hitting percentages with WSU at .239 and CSP at .216, Winona State utilized advantages in digs and at the serving line to aid the win. WSU held a 72-62 edge in digs as well as a 6-4 edge in aces while Concordia finished with 15 service errors and Winona State had seven.
Tori Hanson made it three straight matches with 22 digs or more as she led all players with 23 on the night, matching her season high set last Friday at SCSU.
Ellianna Wiertsema added 11 digs while
Emma Schmidt chipped in 10. Schmidt also contributed 13 kills for the double-double.
Schmidt was joined by
Sophia Andersen and
Jasmine Mulvihill in double figures in kills as Andersen led the team with 15 kills and a .344 hitting percentage while Mulvihill had 11 kills, seven digs and three aces.
Ellie Veldman dished out 47 assists on the night.
Megan Flom was a force for the Warriors as she led all players with 21 kills on 37 swings to finish with a .373 hitting percentage while Bre Maloney put up a massive double-double with 43 assists and 18 digs in the win.
After a back-and-forth start in which neither team managed to break away early in the first set, the Warriors strung together a 5-0 run to take a 16-11 lead midway through. The Golden Bears responded with three straight, but that's all the closer they would get as WSU held them at bay to take the opener 25-22.
Concordia ran out to a 4-0 lead in the second set before the Warriors turned the tide midway through to build a four point lead at 17-13. CSP stormed back with seven in a row to regain the lead as they went on to even the set with a 25-22 set win.
The Warriors spent much of the third set clinging to a slim lead as the Golden Bears remained within a point at 19-18, but CSP was unable to pull even or take the lead down the stretch as WSU took the set 25-20.
CSP looked to be in control in the fourth as they took seven of the first nine points and remained out front at 15-11, but a massive 12-1 run, sparked by a burst of nine points in a row, gave the Warriors the decisive edge. The two teams traded the final few points as the Warriors closed out the victory with a 25-18 win in the set.
Concordia returns to conference play this weekend as they host Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Saturday on Homecoming weekend.
