Golden Bears prepare for weekend road trip to North Dakota

10.18.21

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team (7-5-1, 6-3-1 NSIC) will travel to North Dakota this weekend after splitting last weekend with a loss on Friday and a win on Sunday. They look to play UMary (7-3-3, 6-2-2 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and Minot State on Sunday, Oct. 24 at noon.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Head Coach Steve Bellis commented, "It's two very competitive teams who are sitting just above us in the standings, so that makes these games pretty important. We'd obviously love to be in a position at the end of the regular season to host a conference playoff game or two."

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS
UMary will host CSP after falling to Augustana 3-2 on Oct. 17 when the Vikings scored on a penalty kick in overtime. As of this writing, the UMary currently sits one spot above Concordia in the NSIC standings by a lead of only one point.

The last matchup between the two squads was a draw in Bismarck after two periods of overtime with a final score of 0-0 back on Oct. 6, 2019. The scoreless match moved the all-time record to 3-12-2 for the Bears with 3-1-1 record in the last five meetings.

Offensively, the Marauders are being led by senior forward Hannah Richter. Through 13 games played, she has four goals and four assists for a total of 12 points. On the NSIC leaderboard she ranks 17th with 29 shots, 7th with 21 shots on goal, 15th in goals, and 12th in assists.

Junior midfielder Kayla Alcott also has four assists in 12 games played with one goal. Freshman forward Kendra Park and freshman midfielder Brianna Ramey each have three goals a piece in 10 and 12 games played, respectively.

In net, UMary is being protected by junior Madisyn Waltman who has yet to yield any playing minutes to another keeper on her team. The keeper sits at 4th in the NSIC for goals against through 13 games and 1239 minutes played, allowing 11 goals and an average of .800. She has also totaled 49 saves and averages 3.77 saves per game. Her seven shutouts in 2021 places her tied for 1st in the league with Minot State's keeper.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Minot State will first play host to Minnesota State before the Golden Bears arrive on Sunday. Previously first in the NSIC, Minot State has since dropped to 3rd after a loss against Augustana on Oct. 15 and a scoreless tie against Wayne State on Oct. 17.

In the all-time record between the Bears and the Beavers dating back to 2012, the Bears are 1-7 but earned their first win in the last meeting between the squads while in Minot. The 5-0 victory on Oct. 4, 2019 was reached largely in part by two current Golden Bears, Nikki Anderson, who had one goal, and Katie Anderson, who had two.

A large part of Minot State's recent success has been on behalf of redshirt senior forward Sofia Lewis and redshirt junior forward Chloe Allen. With eight goals, Lewis is 3rd in the conference while Allen is in 6th with six and is one spot below CSP's Katie Anderson

Additionally, redshirt freshman midfielder Sofia Galvez leads the Beavers with three assists, followed closely by redshirt freshman midfielder Tiffany Schennum with two. Six other Beavers have at least one assist.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Maddie Kindred has been the sole keeper in net for Minot State this season. In 13 games she has recorded 11 goals against, placing her behind UMary's keeper for 5th in the NSIC. She has also made 69 saves which is 3rd best in the conference. Seven shutouts for the keeper has her tied for 1st in the NSIC in that category.

Lastly, Coach Bellis mentioned his squad "will be ready to get after it and prove themselves."

After the weekend on the road, the Golden Bears will play a split weekend between home and away. The Bears will play Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in Marshall, Minn. and then will host Sioux Falls at Sea Foam Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.
