Golden Bears keep undefeated streak alive with close win over WSC

CSP moves to 4-0 on the season

WAYNE, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (4-0) narrowly defeated the Wayne State Wildcats (1-3) 93-86 on Saturday afternoon to keep their undefeated streak alive.

For the first time this season, the CSP offense came out flat as Wayne State started the game on an 11-0 run. It wasn't until nearly four minutes into the game when freshmen forward Lindsey Becher hit a jumper to finally get the Golden Bears on the board. From that point, the momentum shifted heavily in the Bears' favor as they went on a 12-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game. Things remained close for the rest of the quarter with CSP taking a tight 23-22 advantage into the break.

It was all CSP to start the second quarter with the Bears opening on another 12-0 run. Heading into halftime, CSP carried a 49-40 lead.

The third quarter quickly tipped the other way, with Wayne State's Erin Norling scoring the first four points to cut the Golden Bear lead to five. The Wildcats controlled most of the quarter, outscoring CSP 28-18 on 7-10 shooting from the floor and a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.

Entering the fourth down by one, the Golden Bears put up five unanswered to take a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Concordia outscored Wayne State 26-18 in the final quarter.

Senior guard Riley Wheatcraft carried much of the load for the Bears, finishing with 26 points on 9-13 shooting from the floor. Becher had the best game of her young career, putting up a career-high 25 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Senior guard Danielle Schaub was the only other Bear to finish in double figures, recording 12 points, four assists, and two rebounds.

The Bears shot the ball well in the game, shooting 32-62 from the floor (51.6%). The Golden Bear defense enjoyed another solid outing, holding Wayne State to just 39.7% shooting from the field. Wayne State's Erin Norling got back to her usual self in the game, recording 23 points and 13 rebounds.

The Golden Bears will return to action next weekend with a pair of home games against Augustana on Friday and Saturday.
