LAST TIME OUT
Two weekends ago, the Golden Bears dropped two games at Augustana as they fell 106-61 on Friday and 91-52 on Saturday at Sanford Pentagon.
On Friday, Concordia found themselves in an early hole and they were unable to slow down the Vikings as Augustana cruised to a comfortable win. Augie took advantage of 22 CSP turnovers to hold a 31-4 advantage in points off turnovers while also utilizing their massive front line on the offensive glass and in the paint. The Vikings used a 20-7 edge in offensive rebounds to outscore Concordia 21-8 in second chance points to go along with a 48-20 edge in points in the paint.
Carlos Barela provided a bright spot for the Golden Bears as he finished with a team-best 14 points on 4-7 shooting and 5-6 from the line while pulling down three boards.
Caden Hoffman chipped in 10 points, three rebounds and two assists while hitting all six attempts from the free throw line.
Matt Johns and
Jacob Shields contributed nine points apiece as well.
In Saturday's loss, Concordia remained within striking distance throughout much of the first half, but Augie finished the half on a 10-3 run before carrying that momentum past the break. The Vikings followed a similar script to victory in both games on the weekend as they used a 14-2 edge on the offensive glass to build a 15-0 advantage in second chance points while also collecting a 56-16 edge in points in the paint and a 29-2 edge in points off turnovers.
Matt Johns was the top producer for Concordia in the contest as he led the team with 16 points and a pair of blocks as he hit 5-11 from the field and 4-9 from deep.
Caden Hoffman led the team with seven boards and three assists while
Jax Madson finished with seven points and five rebounds in the loss.
SCSU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears will meet the Huskies for the 29
th and 30
th times in series history this weekend as CSP has gone 7-21 in the previous 29 meetings. Concordia's best stretch in the series came from 2010-12 as they won three of four meetings during that span. Since then, SCSU has won seven of the last nine with their lone win coming on Jan. 3, 2015 in St. Paul. In 13 meetings in St. Paul, CSP has gone 5-8.
LAST MEETING VS SCSU
Back on Jan. 17, 2020, the Golden Bears fell just short of erasing a double-digit halftime deficit as they dropped a contest at St. Cloud State by a score of 100-90.
For the second year in a row, the two teams eclipsed 190 points as SCSU followed up CSP's 107-91 win in St. Paul nearly a year ago to the day with a 100-90 win on their home court. The Golden Bears closed the deficit to just two points midway through the second half, but they were unable to complete the comeback.
The Golden Bears continued to be efficient on the offensive end as they cleared 50.0% shooting for the seventh time in 11 conference games, finishing at 51.6% (32-62) overall after hitting 57.1% (16-28) in the first half. CSP was especially effective from deep before the break as they knocked down 7-12 (58.3%) in the opening half before finishing the game at 42.9% (9-21) from three-point range in the game. SCSU, meanwhile, hit 46.0% (29-63) on the night.
Turnovers and transition play proved to be the difference-makers in the game as the Huskies used an 18-10 edge in turnovers forced into a 27-12 edge in points off turnovers. St. Cloud State also managed 29 fastbreak points while Concordia had 11. The Golden Bears did manage a 27-7 advantage in bench scoring as well as a 42-30 edge in points in the paint in the loss.
Jordan Coblin was the focal point of the CSP offense on the night as he hit 12-17 from the floor and 2-4 from beyond the arc to finish with 28 points, six assists and four boards while playing all 40 minutes. His 28 points were three shy of his career best.
Coblin was one of four CSP players in double figures as
Cody Carlson and
Perion Little each had 14 points while
Carlos Barela had 11. Carlson added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year while Little hit 4-7 shooting and Barela added four boards.
