ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team started their season with a bang with a dominant 95-32 win over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears got off to a quick start as they won the jump and junior guard Meghan DuBois dished it out to freshman forward Lindsey Becher for the first points of the game.
The early momentum continued for CSP as they quickly jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind four early points from senior forward Sidney Wentland and 2 blocks from Becher.
Senior guard Danielle Schaub put up 9 points in the first quarter to guide the Bears to a commanding 21-10 lead heading in the second quarter.
It was a game of offensive runs for the Golden Bears, starting with a 19-0 scoring run that stretched from the end of the first quarter to the middle of the second. At the half, CSP led UMC 47-16.
The Bears came out hot again in the second half as DuBois quickly pushed it down the court to start the half with a fast break bucket. The scoring runs continued as CSP went on a 13-0 run late in the third quarter to push the score to 64-22 at the end of three.
CSP continued to dominate on both ends of the court in the final quarter as they outscored the Golden Eagles 31-10 and ended the game on an 11-0 run to seal the victory.
The Golden Bears defense stood strong throughout the game as they forced 27 turnovers and held the Golden Eagles to 22.4% shooting from the field. CSP never trailed in the game.
The Golden Bears got contributions from all over the roster with 12 different players recording points and four reaching double figures.
DuBois finished with a game high 14 points to go along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. Schaub finished with 11 points and two assists.
Both of CSP's freshmen shined as each of them reached double figures in their first collegiate game. Forward Lindsey Becher put on an impressive show as she shot over 85% from the field and recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks in her collegiate debut. Freshman guard Sarah Kuma also gave the Bears strong contributions as she put up 10 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
The Golden Bears will return to the court tomorrow for another 2 p.m. tip off against Minnesota Crookston.
