ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (5-1) fell to Augustana (3-3) 80-70 on Saturday afternoon, snapping their perfect start to the season.
The 5-0 start to the season was CSP's first since 2009-10. It was also the Bears' first five game win streak since the 2018-19 season.
The Bears came out strong in the first quarter, quickly jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Following their slow start, the Vikings got rolling around the midway point of the first. Augie ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 18-10 lead into the first break.
Both offenses struggled to get going in the second quarter as each of them shot below 28% from the floor. CSP was able to cut the deficit to just three as the Vikings took a 26-23 lead into halftime.
The offenses both fared better coming out of the half as the teams each shot above 40% from the floor. CSP managed to outscore Augie 22-21 to make it a two-point game at the end of the third.
The Bears had their chances in the fourth quarter but could never quite close the gap. Augie outscored CSP 33-25 in the final frame to close out the win.
Despite outrebounding the Vikings and winning the battle in the paint, the Bears never fully clicked on offense throughout the game. The turnover issues also popped up again for Concordia as they committed 17 to Augie's 9.
Senior guard
Riley Wheatcraft led the way for the Bears, putting up 19 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard
Sarah Kuma had a strong game off the bench with 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore guard
Jadyn Hanson also put up a solid performance with nine points, two rebounds, and three assists.
Lauren Sees and Aislinn Duffy topped the score sheet for the Vikings as each of them put up 16 points in the game.
The Golden Bears will return to the Gangelhoff Center next Friday and Saturday for a pair of matchups with the Sioux Falls Cougars.
