Golden Bears nipped by Wildcats

CSP's late comeback fizzles at the buzzer

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite trailing by five points with 38 seconds to play, Concordia-St. Paul had a chance to tie in the game's closing seconds, but Wayne State (8-15, 5-9 NSIC) blocked Concordia-St. Paul's (6-12, 4-10 NSIC) three-pointer with two seconds to play to hold off the Golden Bears 66-63 on Saturday evening at Gangelhoff Center.

The closely contested game featured 20 lead changes and six ties, and neither team led by more than five points throughout. CSP returns to the road next weekend, heading to Northern State on Friday and MSU Moorhead on Saturday.

Facing the late five point deficit, Concordia was aggressive in attacking the basket as junior Jordan Coblin was fouled inside, converting his free throws to make it a one possession game with 32 seconds left.

The Golden Bears then forced an errant pass from the backcourt into the frontcourt while facing a 10 second violation, turning it back over to CSP with 22 seconds to go.

After Concordia wasn't able to convert at the rim, the Golden Bears forced a steal on Wayne State's inbounds pass to get the ball back with 11 seconds to play, but missed the last second three-pointer to tie.

Junior Jacob Shields led four Golden Bears in double-figures with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Three others: Coblin, Max Keefe and Lee Higgins each scored 12 points. Keefe, in front of at least 20 of his family members, scored his 12 points with maximum efficiency, needing just four shots (4-4), including a pair of three-pointers and sinking both of his free throws. He added four rebounds and a pair of blocks off the bench.

Six of Concordia's seven players who competed in this evening's game scored at least six points, with Cody Carlson and Carlos Barela each scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds. Barela added five assists, as well.

Concordia held Wayne State to 40.0 percent (26-65) shooting and 33.3 percent (9-27) from three-point range. Concordia was able to top both of those figures, hitting 43.1 percent (25-58) from the field and 36.8 percent (7-19) from deep. Each team attempted just seven free throws, with CSP edging WSC by hitting six compared to five for the Wildcats.

The edge for Wayne State came on the glass, with a 41-32 rebounding margin, doubling up Concordia 16-8 on the offensive glass including a decisive 15-2 edge in second chance points.

The Wildcats were led by forward Jordan Janssen's near triple-double with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds while chipping in four blocks and a pair of steals. Nate Mohr added 19 points including five three-pointers while Nick Ferrarini had 16 points.
