After a strong first half the Bears drop contest against Augie

A second half surge by the Vikings sinks Concordia

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (9-10, 6-7 NSIC) faced Augustana (11-6, 7-6 NSIC) on Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center. Despite catching an early lead, the Golden Bears fell to the Vikings with a final score of 86-73.
 
 
The game was tied on three different occasions and had two lead changes in the first half, making for an exciting game on both ends of the court. CSP led by two after the first quarter, scoring 18 points to go 47.1% (8-17) from the field while holding the Vikings to 43.8% (7-16). A physical game brought both teams to the line early in the game, the Bears taking advantage by finishing 3-4 (75%) while the Vikings struggled and put in one of four.
 
 
Danielle Schaub brought the excitement to the court for the Golden Bears, hitting six out of eight from the floor to score 14 points in the first half. Two three pointers from the junior guard played a significant role in the squads 38-32 lead at the half.
 
 
On the floor for all 40 minutes of the game, Schaub concluded the night with 21 points which is just one-point shy of her career high. She broke a personal record in field goal shooting, going 9 for 16 (56.3%) and shot 50% from the beyond the arc. She contributed to her team in numerous ways, also providing three assists, three rebounds, and a steal in her active night.
 
 
Augustana returned from the locker room able to create more shot opportunities than Concordia, shooting 50% (9-18) in the third quarter and outscoring the Bears 25-13. The Vikings took the lead with three-minutes to go of the quarter and kept it until the final buzzer. With significant shots off second chances (7-points) and bonus' from the line (6-9 FT-pts), Augie held CSP to 4 of 15 from the floor and had a 57-51 lead going into the fourth quarter.
 
 
By the last quarter, Augustana's shooting kept getting better and they went 8-14 (57.1%) from the floor to outscore CSP 29-22. With Augie in a zone defense, the Bears lacked the opportunities they needed for three-pointers and were held to 2 of 6 from three. Viking senior, McKenzee Zilverberg, dominated the floor and scored nine of her 17 points in the fourth.
 
 
For the Bears, Sydney Schultz collected her fourth double-double of the season upon grabbing 11 rebounds and 15 points. The sophomore's aggressive strides towards the basket led to six of six free throw shooting as she went 5-11 (45.5%) from the field.
 
 
Sidney Wentland was right there with Schaub, on the court for all 40 minutes of the game and a key player for the squad. The junior put 12 points on the score board and snatched six rebounds, three of which were on the offensive end.
 
 
For the Vikings, senior guard Hana Beyer provided a lot of energy, scoring 13 points and going 6-7 (85.7%) from the floor. Beyer got ahold of seven rebounds and contributed three assists. Hannah Mitby scored 12 points and led in assists with six. The junior also put up two blocks and one steal against the Bears.
 
 
As a team, the Golden Bears shot 42.2% (27-64) from the floor and 26.3% (5-19). CSP was the most efficient from the free throw line that they've been all season, going 14-18 (77.8%) to take advantage of the Vikings shooting fouls. Concordia outrebounded Augustana 37-35 and 11-7 on the offensive end. Turnovers were relatively even on both sides, but Augie won the turnover battle 13-14.
 
 
The women will look to get back on their winning streak tomorrow afternoon in a game against Wayne State (13-5, 8-4 NSIC). The Golden Bears will return to the court at 3:30 p.m. with the home court advantage. A livestream of the game will be available at cspbears.com/watch.
