DULUTH, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (6-10, 4-8 NSIC) took part in yet another high-scoring contest as they fell at Minnesota Duluth (14-4, 9-3 NSIC) by a score of 101-92 on Saturday night.
It was another night of fast-paced action as CSP and their opponents combined for a staggering 383 points on the weekend. The Golden Bears put up their second best offensive performance of the season as they knocked down 57.6% (34-59) from the field, just shy of their season-best mark of 59.6% set against SMSU last weekend. Concordia also connected on a season-high 12 threes as they hit 50.0% of their 24 attempts. CSP was also nearly perfect at the free throw line as they hit 92.3% (12-13). UMD, on the other hand, hit 53.6% (30-56) from the field, 56.0% (14-25) from deep and 87.1% (27-31) from the free throw line in the win.
The loss drops CSP to 13-16 in the all-time series and 6-9 in Duluth as the Bulldogs added to their advantage in series.
In addition to their shooting advantage from the field, Concordia also had a 40-28 edge in points in the paint as well as a 20-13 edge in bench points. UMD, meanwhile, had a 30-24 edge on the glass and a 10-2 advantage in second chance points.
Jordan Coblin stayed hot as he finished with 20+ points for the fourth time in five games. The Boca Raton native led the squad with 27 points on 9-14 shooting, 6-8 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the free throw line as he flirted with a triple-double with seven assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
Coblin was just one of six Concordia players to reach double figures in scoring as
Max Keefe,
Cody Carlson,
Lee Higgins,
Jacob Shields and
Perion Little also hit the mark. Keefe and Carlson each finished with 12 points as Keefe added five assists and four boards while Carlson hit 5-9 from the floor. Higgins and Shields each chipped in 11 points while Little hit 3-4 from the floor to finish with 10 points.
The duo of Drew Blair and Brandon Myer did the heavy lifting for Minnesota Duluth as Blair put up 33 points on an incredible 9-11 shooting, 3-4 from three-point range and 12-12 from the free throw line while Myer scored 31 points on 8-15 from the field, 4-6 from deep and 11-11 from the charity stripe.
With UMD holding a 9-8 lead just over three minutes into the game, the Golden Bears built their largest lead of the contest with back-to-back threes from Coblin and Keefe to make it 14-9. It proved to be short-lived, however, as the Bulldogs answered with the next seven points in a row to regain the lead. Concordia tied it up at 16-16 and again at 18-18 at the 12:54 mark, but a 10-2 run in favor of Minnesota Duluth put the Bulldogs in front 28-20 midway through the half.
Concordia battled back to within four at 30-26 before chipping it to three at 37-34 and again at 40-37 before the UMD lead reaching double figures at 47-37 following a 7-0 burst. CSP trimmed that lead in half in the final two minutes before Minnesota Duluth pushed it back to seven at 55-48 at the break.
The Golden Bears were back within five with a
Lee Higgins bucket to open the half and kept it at that margin at 59-54 with 18:30 to play, but the Bulldogs held CSP scoreless over the next two minutes while extending their lead to 13 at 67-54. The run continued as UMD pushed their lead to 17 at 77-60, but Concordia would not go away.
CSP wasted little time in making things interesting as they scored 14 of the next 16 points to trim the deficit all the way down to five at 79-74 with 8:23 to go. Concordia further closed the gap to four at 82-78, but UMD quickly had it back to double figures at 90-80 following an 8-2 run. The Golden Bears put together one final push as they used a 5-0 run to close the gap back to six at 93-87 with 2:01 to play, but back-to-back threes for the Bulldogs put it out of reach as UMD held on for a 101-92 win.
CSP returns home next weekend as Augustana comes to town on Friday and Wayne State comes to town on Saturday.
