ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (9-7, 6-4 NSIC) will be on the road again this weekend as they travel to St. Cloud State (10-4, 7-3 NSIC) on Friday and the University of Minnesota Duluth (12-4, 9-1 NSIC) on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Golden Bears were at Southwest Minnesota State and the University of Sioux Falls where they went 1-1 on the road.
The Golden Bears played their best in the fourth quarter of both games. Against the Mustangs, CSP outscored them 26-7 after a 17-2 run and shot 64.7% (11-17) from the field in the final quarter to earn the victory.
Against the Cougars on Saturday, the Bears couldn't get over 38% from the field until the fourth quarter when they went 10-16 (62.5%) from the floor. They outscored USF 25-18 but found their traction too late in the game and it was the Cougars who came out on top.
Riley Wheatcraft was a key part of CSP's scoring, ending the weekend with a combined 34 points and 11 rebounds. She drained five three pointers and put up four blocks to play a big role on both the offensive and defensive end for Concordia.
SCSU SERIES HISTORY
CSP has won eight of the last ten matchup's with St. Cloud State and are currently tied 17-17 in the all-time series. The Golden Bears have won the last four games at SCSU and are 8-13 while playing the Huskies on the road.
LAST MEETING VS SCSU
In their meeting back in January of 2019, CSP defeated St. Cloud State 63-50 at home. The Golden Bears were down by two in the middle of the fourth quarter but were able to close the game strong.
Concordia held the Huskies to 29.2% shooting on game, including 16.7% in the fourth quarter.
Sidney Wentland started last year's game and contributed eight rebounds, three assists, and a block in the win.
Concordia led in points off of turnovers (13-8), points in the paint (26-18), second-chance points (10-5), and fast-break points (7-3). They also outrebounded the Huskies 47-35.
Tori Wortz will return as a guard for the Huskies, the junior scored 11 points and picked up three rebounds in the last meeting. Katrina Theis also scored 11 points against the Bears in addition to nine rebounds and a block.
ABOUT THE HUSKIES
Madelin Dammann leads the Huskies in scoring at 12.3 points per game. The senior guard is shooting 40.1% from the field and 34.2% from the three-point line while averaging 4.4 rebounds per game.
Tori Wortz is right being with 11.6 points per game and leads the team in assists with 2.9 per game. Ranking ninth in the NSIC for her rebounding is junior forward Nikki Kilboten who has been averaging 7.2 rebounds a game in addition to 10.9 points. Kilboten also ranks third in the NSIC for blocks with 1.8 a game.
As a team, the Huskies have been resilient on defense and ranking second in conference by allowing just 57.9 points per game. They are shooting 42.3% from the field and 33.2% from the three-point line. SCSU's turnover margin of 2.43 ranks fourth.
UMD SERIES HISTORY
Concordia and UMD also are tied in their all-time series record, 22-22. The Golden Bears have had more success in recent games, as CSP is 11-4 in the last fifteen matchups. CSP is 9-16 against UMD on the road.
LAST MEETING VS UMD
The Golden Bears last played Minnesota Duluth on January 19
th of 2019. CSP won the low scoring game with a final score of 51-47.
The Golden Bears played tough defense throughout the game, holding the Bulldogs to 32.8% shooting on the game from the field and 25.0% from three. Concordia was also able to limit UMD to just five made field goals in the fourth quarter.
Sidney Wentland scored seven points against the Bulldogs and grabbed five rebounds, two steals, and a block. The Golden Bears shot 37.5% from the field, 40% from the three, and 60% from the free-throw line.
Ann Simonet and Sarah Grow will both return to the court this weekend for UMD and each scored 11 points in the game last season. The duo combined for ten rebounds and 40% shooting.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Brooke Olson is the leading scorer for Minnesota Duluth by nearly six points, averaging 15.6 points per game while her closest teammate, Katie Stark, picks up 9.6 points per game. Olson ranks sixth in the NSIC in scoring and third in field goal percentage (52.3%). She is also the teams top rebounder with 6.2 a game.
Stark is ranked tenth in the conference for three-pointers made per game (1.9) and seventh in blocks per game (1.1). Sarah Grow is second in the NSIC for blocked shots per game with 1.8 and is averaging 9.5 points per game.
The Bulldogs are shooting 44.1% (5
th NSIC) from the field and 35.6% (4
th NSIC) from the three. UMD is known for sharing the ball well and provide 15.81 assists a game which ranks second in the conference.
NSIC LEADERS
Concordia has three players that have four or more top-ten rankings in the NSIC. The Golden Bears are also the only team to have four players in the top-20 rankings for minutes played per game, as well as the only team with three players in the top-ten for minutes played.
Sidney Wentland is ranked first in the conference for minutes played, averaging 34.4 minutes per game, and ranked in the top-ten for a total of five categories. The junior forward ranks fifth in blocks per game (1.6), eight in field goal percentage (43.5%), ninth in scoring (14.7), and tenth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). She is also ranked 13
th in both free-throw percentage (73.6%) and assists per game (3.1).
Danielle Schaub and
Meghan DuBois are also spread out across the NSIC rankings. Averaging 11.6 points per game (22nd NSIC), Schaub ranks third in minutes per game (33.9) and seventh in three-pointers per game (2.1). DuBois is the third Golden Bear in the top-ten for minutes played, averaging 33.8 minutes per game (5
th NSIC). The sophomore also ranks third in steals (2.1) and sixth in assists per game (3.9).
The second leading scorer for the Bears with 13.4ppg (15
th NSIC),
Riley Wheatcraft, is among the top-ten in three-pointers made per game with 2.1 per game (9
th NSIC). Wheatcraft is the fourth player for CSP in the ranking for minutes played per game at 31.8 (12
th NSIC).
The Golden Bears are the top team in the conference for blocks, ranking first with 4.81 each game, and in three-point percentage as they shoot 38%.
