ST. Paul, Minn. – For NSIC Day, the Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (5-0-1, 2-0-1 NSIC) defeated the St. Cloud State Huskies (2-2-2, 1-1-1 NSIC) 1-0, on a chilly Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul.
Concordia is now 4-10-5 in their all-time series history with St. Cloud State. Last season, the Bears tied the Huskies 1-1 in St. Cloud. For the second year in a row the Golden Bears have a 5-0-1 record in their first six games of the year.
Freshman
Nikki Anderson was the one who found the back of the net for the Golden Bears, late into the game in the 83
rdminute. The Illinois native scored off a pass, from
Haleigh Bares. This was Anderson's third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with
Leah Johnson and
Hannah Pedersen.
Haleigh Bares recorded her first assist of the season and the first of her career.
Both teams played tough in the first half as The Huskies had possession 51% of the half and the Golden Bears had possession 49% of the first half. St. Cloud State recorded six shots with two on net. Both Jenna Dominguez and Carly Ekstrom had scoring chances for the Huskies, but they were shut down by senior goalkeeper
Jordyn Clark. The Golden Bears also had scoring chances in the first half as they fired off six shots and four of them were on net.
Jena Berkland had two great scoring chances, but Huskies keeper Zoe Welsh came up big and made two great saves.
Katie Anderson and
Jackie Ehlert also had shots on net, but Welsh shut the door. The Huskie keeper ended the half with four saves.
The second half was just as close and the roles were reversed, as CSP controlled the ball 51% of time and St. Cloud State possessed the ball 49% of time in the second half. It wasn't until the 83
rd minute, seven minutes left in regulation, that the first goal was scored. Golden Bear freshman,
Nikki Anderson scored to put CSP up 1-0. The Huskies put the pressure on the Bears in the final minutes, but Concordia's tenacious defense held strong and
Jordyn Clark recorded the win and her fourth shutout of the season. The Huskies put up seven shots in the second half with three on goal, the Golden Bears put up six shots with also three shots on goal.
Concordia-St. Paul had a total of 12 shots with seven on goal and the Huskies had a total of 13 shots with five on goal in this game. Both
Jena Berkland and
Nikki Anderson led the offense with each having two total shots on goal in this game.
Jackie Ehlert,
Emily Boyer, and
Katie Anderson also had a shot on net for the Golden Bears.
Jordyn Clark played all 90 minutes and made five saves; she is now 5-0-1 on the season. Clark recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. Zoe Welsh made six saves and played all 90 minutes while taking the loss for the Huskies.

Steve Bellis commented on his team's big conference victory, "A very close game and a great battle tactically in both halves. A moment of composure and incredible team defensive effort won it for us. We are excited with our start but know we can go up a gear yet."
