TUCSON, Ariz. – The Concordia Golden Bears baseball team (7-3) dropped two on Saturday as they fell to Jamestown (9-6) by a score of 4-2 in the first game of the day and Minot State (3-6) by a score of 11-1 in seven innings in the second game of the day at the Tucson Invitational Games.
GAME ONE: Jamestown 4, Concordia-St. Paul 2
Concordia held a slim lead for much of the first game, but the Jimmies scored one in the seventh to tie it and two in the ninth to pick up the victory.
Senior
Cole Kirchoff drove in both of CSP's runs as he picked up an RBI groundout in the fifth before launching his second career home run in the fifth.
Roch Whittaker added a solid game at the plate with two hits, including a double, to go along with a walk as he reached safely three times.
Isaac Hormann,
Steven Nessler and
Drew Sannes all added a hit apiece as well.
Zach Lauzon gave the Golden Bears another solid 7.0 innings of work in the start as he limited the Jimmies to five hits and two runs while striking out seven in the no-decision. The right-hander now has a stellar 1.29 ERA through his first two starts of the year.
Sophomore
Michael Voss (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he allowed two runs in 1.0+ innings while fellow sophomore
Luke DeGrammont followed with 1.0 innings and no runs allowed.
Tanner Roundy did a little bit of everything for the Jimmies as he worked the first 6.0 innings on the mound, striking out five and allowing two runs on five hits, while also finishing 2-4 with three RBIs at the plate. Joe Harris (1-1) then came on to work the final 3.0 frames, allowing just one hit to claim the relief win.
The Golden Bears played some small ball to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning as
Steven Nessler singled and
Jarod Wandersee walked before both moved up on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of
Drew Sannes. It was then Kirchoff's turn to get a job done as he hit a high-hopper to the shortstop to bring in Nessler and give CSP a 1-0 lead.
Concordia continued to hold that one-run lead until the fifth. Entering the inning with just one hit against Lauzon, the Jimmies collected three straight one-out singles, capped by an RBI single for the pitcher, Roundy, to even the score at 1-1.
CSP quickly regained an edge as Kirchoff hammered the third pitch of the inning over the left field wall, nearly hitting the scoreboard to put the Golden Bears back in front at 2-1.
Jamestown threatened to take the lead in the seventh as they put runners on second and third with one out, but Lauzon managed to limit the damage to one run as the runner from second tried to advance on a run-scoring sacrifice fly but was tagged out at third to end the inning.
The Jimmies were back at it again in the ninth as four of the first five hitters reached base safely in the inning. Matt Meraz delivered the go-ahead RBI single to give UJ their first lead of the game before Roundy picked up his third RBI of the contest with a run-scoring double. DeGrammont held Jamestown there as CSP headed to the last half of the ninth trailing 4-2.
The Golden Bears put a runner on with two down in the bottom of nine to bring the tying run to the plate, but Harris picked up a strikeout to close out the win for the Jimmies.
GAME TWO: Minot State 11, Concordia-St. Paul 1 (7 inn.)
In the second game, Minot State jumped ahead early against CSP and continued to pile on as they finished the game with 11 runs on 17 hits to enact the run rule.
Patrick Bordewick provided a bright spot at the plate for the Golden Bears as he went 2-2 with a double and a run scored while
Cole Kirchoff drove in the team's lone run with an RBI double of his own.
Michael Borst, Ryley Humrighouse and Geordie McDougall each contributed three hits for the Beavers as the trio combined for five runs scored and four RBIs.
Keanu Mendez (1-1) took the loss for CSP as he worked the first 4.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and picking up a strikeout.
Nate Stolte and
Ray Wellner each got an inning out of the bullpen as well.
RJ Martinez (1-0) finished off a complete game five-hitter as he held the Golden Bears to one run while striking out five in 7.0 innings.
The Beavers put the Golden Bears in a deep hole in the second as they hung a five spot on the board. Minot State took advantage of a Golden Bear miscue along with run-scoring singles from Humrighouse, McDougall, Borst and Rodriguez in the inning to make it 5-0 heading to the third.
A one-out double from Bordewick followed by a two-out double from Kirchoff a half inning later trimmed a run off the deficit, but Minot State was back at it again in the bottom of the fifth.
McDougall picked up his second RBI hit of the game in the fifth, this time a double down the left field line, before Smith sent a sacrifice fly to left center to extend the lead out to 7-1.
The Beavers added four more runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, capped off by a two-run triple for Smith, to put the run rule into effect in the seventh as the Golden Bears were retired in order to bring the game to a close.
CSP concludes play in the Tucson Invitational Games tomorrow with a noon start against St. Cloud State.
