ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (15-6, 11-5 NSIC) is going back on the road this weekend, facing off against Bemidji State (7-13, 4-12 NSIC) on Friday, February 8th at 5:30 and Minnesota Crookston (13-12, 6-10 NSIC) on Saturday, February 9th at 3:30.
LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Bears went 1-1 last weekend, collecting a win against Northern State and falling to NSIC-leading Minnesota State Moorhead in overtime.
In their matchup against the Wolves, the Golden Bears got off to a quick start and continued to build their lead throughout the game. CSP took a 7-0 lead to start the game, and used a 12-2 run in the second quarter and an 11-0 burst to start the second half en route to 71-49 victory over NSU.
Lexi Lee matched her career high with 18 points on the game, hitting 6-12 from the field and 4-8 from three. Anna Schmitt was Concordia's second leading scorer, pouring in 15 points on an 6-9 from the field and also dishing out three assists. Lindsay Dorr added a career-high five steals while Kyrah Fredenburg pitched in 11 rebounds.
CSP dropped their first home game of the season against MSU Moorhead, falling to the Dragons in the overtime and dropping their record at the Gangelhoff Center to 11-1. Concordia held a double digit lead in the second half, but was unable to hold off MSUM's comeback effort and ended up falling in the extra session.
The highlight of the game for CSP was senior guard Kyrah Fredenburg setting the school record for career rebounds, as she passed Dana Christopher (871 rebounds, 1987-1991) with her sixth rebound of the game. Fredenburg corralled 15 rebounds on the game and now has 881 career boards.
Concordia was led in the scoring department by Lindsay Dorr, who collected a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Anna Schmitt also added 18 points for CSP, including a layup with 2.9 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
BEMIDJI STATE HISTORY
Concordia has had success against the Beavers all-time, going 30-11 in their 41 matchups. The Golden Bears have won the last four games between the two programs and 27 of the last 29. Concordia is 11-3 playing in Bemidji in NSIC play.
LAST TIME AGAINST BSU
The Golden Beavers hosted the Beavers last year, coming away with a 63-53 victory in a balanced offensive effort. CSP fell behind early, but took the lead just before the end of the first half and never gave it up.
Anna Schmitt led all scorers in that game with 16 points, while also grabbing a career-high nine rebounds and dishing out three assists. The Golden Bears also received a big boost from their bench brigade, as Ayla Lemke, Hadyn Becker, and Lexi Lee all finished with nine points for Concordia.
The Golden Bears took advantage of extra possessions in that matchup, as they forced 20 BSU turnovers and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. Concordia also blocked eight Beaver shots, including five blocks for Lemke.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
The Beavers feature a balanced scoring attack as they don't have a player currently averaging above 10.0 points per game. Taylor Bray and Brooklyn Bachmann lead the team with 9.5 points per game apiece. Bray has scored double digits in six of the last nine games and is shooting 55.8% from the field on the season.
Freshman Trinity Myer has also big big for the Beavers lately, averaging 12.2 points per game in the last four contests. That included a 20-point game against University of Mary where Myer made 5-10 shots from the floor and 9-11 from the free throw line.
Bemidji State lost their first 10 games in NSIC play, but they have been much more competitive since ending that losing streak. The Beavers have won three of their last six games, including their last two games at home.
The Beavers rely on three-point shot quite a bit, as they rank fifth in the NSIC with 366 three-point attempts in conference play (22.9 per game). They are currently hitting threes at a 30.9% clip (11th NSIC) and rank 7th in the conference in the threes per game (7.1).
Bemidji State has struggled on defense this season, ranking last in the NSIC in defensive field goal percentage (43.7%) in conference play. They also rank 15th in scoring margin at -14.4.
MINNESOTA CROOKSTON HISTORY
The Golden Bears are 23-9 all-time against the Golden Eagles, but UMC has had the upper hand recently. Minnesota Crookston has won the last two games in the series, and has also been victorious in five of the last seven. Concordia is 10-5 all-time at Lysaker Gymnasium.
LAST TIME AGAINST UMC
Concordia hosted Minnesota Crookston last January, falling 75-60 to the Golden Eagles. CSP and UMC were within two points at the end of the third quarter, but Minnesota Crookston won the fourth quarter 26-13 to secure the win.
Neither team was able to get more than a seven-point lead through three quarters and there were 11 lead changes throughout the game. The Eagles forced 20 turnovers and capitalized on 20 points off of those CSP missteps. CSP and Crookston both ended with 45 rebounds, but the Golden Eagles scored 21 points off of their second chances, compared to the Bears' 13.
Anna Schmitt led the Golden Bears in scoring with 15 points while Lexi Lee posted 10 points. Senior Haydn Becker and junior Kayla Miller both put together a strong rebounding performances, each ending with 11 (career-high mark for both). They also were an offensive threat, as Miller scored eight and Becker ended with seven. Becker also registered a career-high seven assists.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The Golden Eagles are led by Isieoma Odor, a senior forward from Bloomington, Minnesota. Odor ranks third in the conference with 18.3 points per game and seventh in the NSIC with 8.7 rebounds per game. Odor has scored 20+ points in five of the last seven games.
The Golden Eagles have been one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the conference, shooting 74.2% from the line. Minnesota Crookston has attempted 18.7 free throws per game, sixth in the NSIC.
UMC has struggled rebounding the ball in NSIC play, ranking 15th in the NSIC in rebounding margin (-6.7), 16th in offensive rebounds per game (8.1), and fourth in rebounds per game (34.1 per game).
Minnesota Crookston hasn't been as good against NSIC South teams, going 1-5 against squads from CSP's division. UMC has dropped their last four games in total and seven of their last eight.
KEY STATS
One of the biggest keys this year for the Golden Bears has been three-point shooting. CSP is 15-1 when making five or more threes in a game and 0-5 when not breaking that threshold.
Outrebounding and outshooting opponents has also been huge for CSP. The Golden Bears are 12-1 when outrebounding their opponent and 13-1 when shooting a higher percentage than their opposition.
Lindsay Dorr has been very consistent for the Golden Bears, posting 14 or more points in 19 of 21 games. Dorr has also grabbed seven or more rebounds in 19 of 21 games.
Kyrah Fredenburg has been one of the best in the NSIC on the boards as of late, averaging 12.4 rebounds per game over her last seven contests. The senior guard has secured at least 11 rebounds in six of her last seven games and is averaging 10.0 rebounds per game on the season.
Concordia has displayed stout defense in conference play, ranking first in opponent field goal percentage (35.4%). CSP has held each of their last nine opponents to less than 40% shooting.
