WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – In their second day of dome games in West St. Paul, the Concordia-St. Paul softball team (3-4) dropped their matchup with Upper Iowa (6-2) by a score of 1-0. Despite some solid defensive play the Golden Bears were unable to get any runners across, losing by one run for the second time in two days.
The Golden Bears are now 23-13 in their all-time series history with the Peacocks, with Upper Iowa taking seven of the last eight contests.
Samantha Sullivan started in the circle for Concordia, giving up only four hits in her five innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out four while walking only one. Junior
Kali Kaestner pitched the sixth inning for Sullivan, retiring the Peacocks 1-2-3. The Bears' defense played well behind their pitching staff, committing no errors. Senior
Justine Schattner was busy all game at third base, recording five of the team's nine assists.
Offensively, CSP struggled to get people on base. The team tallied three hits on the day, all of which were scattered during different innings. Schattner walked and two other runners reached on an error throughout the game, but once again, the Golden Bears were not able to string any of these offensive chances together.
Senior centerfielder
Carlie Hart recorded Concordia's first hit of the day, on a bunt single in the third inning. In the next inning,
Amanda Parsons reached on a fielding error by third base and stole second, but was left on base.
Hanna Mortenson came up with an opposite field single to start the fifth inning, and Giese lined a single in the seventh, but both runners were unable to score.
The Peacocks scored their lone run in the third inning when Kaylee Frenette tripled down the left field line. She was then driven in when the next batter hit a single to the pitcher. The Golden Bears were successful in stopping all of the other Upper Iowa scoring threats, as the Peacocks had runners in scoring position in three other innings, but the CSP defense held strong.
The Golden Bears will next play on March 3
rd, when they travel to Florida for the Spring Games. Concordia will play ten games in the span of six days while in Clermont, taking on ten different opponents, beginning with the University of the Sciences and Clarion. Live stats will be available for CSP's games in Florida at
