ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (15-5, 11-4 NSIC) defeated Northern State (8-13, 5-10 NSIC) 71-49 at the Gangelhoff Center on Friday night. CSP remains tied atop the NSIC South with Augustana and is now 11-0 at home.
Concordia played an efficient offensive game while also locking down the Wolves attack to secure their 11th win in their last 13 games. Concordia shot 41.7% to Northern State's 33.3% and outshot the Wolves 40% to 25% from three-point range. The Golden Bears used a balanced scoring effort, as six players had five points or more.
CSP also matched their season low in turnovers, with just eight on the game. On the flip side, the Golden Bears turned 16 NSU turnovers into 20 points. Concordia moved the ball well all night, doubling up the Wolves in the assist category (14-7). The Golden Bears also matched their season high for threes in a game with 10.
Lexi Lee matched her career high in scoring, netting 18 points on 6-12 shooting, including 4-8 from three. Anna Schmitt pitched in 15 points of her own on 6-9 shooting, also dishing out three assists. Riley Wheatcraft was the third Golden Bears to finish in double digits with 11 points, contributing an additional three steals. Lindsay Dorr also set a career high in steals with five swipes in the win.
Kyrah Fredenburg continued to control the glass for the Golden Bears, as her 11-rebound game was her fifth double-digit rebounding effort in the last six games. The senior guard now sits in second all-time in program history in rebounds with 866, as she passed Anika Whiting (863, 2011-15). Fredenburg is now just six boards away from setting a new CSP rebounding record, as she trails just Dana Christopher (871, 1987-1991).
The Golden Bears struck first with a Lee three-point shot, and Northern State answered back with two buckets to take a 4-3 lead. The Wolves would not regain the lead for the rest of the quarter (or the game), as the Golden Bears started to get hot from the field. Â Anna Schmitt led the first quarter effort for CSP, scoring nine points in the opening frame as Concordia closed the opening 10-minute span on a 13-6 run. CSP led 19-12 going into the second quarter.
The Golden Bears continued their momentum over the quarter break, as they opened the second frame on a 12-2 run to expand their lead to 31-14 with 5:11 left in the half. Concordia and Northern State went back and forth for the remained of the second quarter, and CSP closed the half with a pull-up jumper by Danielle Schaub with five seconds to go to give them a 36-23 lead going into halftime. It was a balanced scoring effort in the first half, as eight CSP players had contributed points in a solid offensive first half.
CSP came out of halftime on fire, ripping off an 11-0 burst to start the third quarter. That gave the Golden Bears a 47-23 lead with 7:29 lead in the third quarter, and the Wolves would not get closer than 16 points for the remainder of the game. CSP would go on another 10-2 early in the third quarter and late in the fourth to go back up by 24 and seal the win.
Concordia will face off against Minnesota State Moorhead tomorrow at the Gangelhoff Center at 3:30. The Dragons won their first 12 NSIC games and have the most conference victories (13) among the 16-team NSIC, but they have dropped two of their last three games.
