ST. PAUL, Minn. - In a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes in the first half, it was a 13-0 second half run that pushed visiting Sioux Falls (6-2, 2-0 NSIC) past host Concordia-St. Paul (2-3, 0-1 NSIC) 78-71 on Friday night in the Golden Bears' Northern Sun opener at Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears remain at home tomorrow night with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Southwest Minnesota State.
Concordia junior guard
Jordan Coblin led the squad with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while sophomore guard
Noah Kannegiesser added 16 points in 30 minutes off the bench.
All seven Golden Bears converted at least one three-pointer on the night, but Concordia combined to shoot just 30.3 percent (10-33) from the arc. Concordia had late life as the Cougars were inefficient at the foul line, making just 52.7 percent (13-25) overall and 2-of-9 in the final 52 seconds.
The squads were tied at 40 early in the second half when junior forward
Jacob Shields knocked down a three-pointer on a feed from Coblin for the game's 11th (and final) tie. From there, the Cougars sprinted away behind a pair of buckets from Chase Grinde with a 13-0 run that was capped off by back-to-back three-pointers by Jack Thompson.
Grinde led the Cougars with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and knocked down his only three-point attempt. His efficient shooting helped offset his 3-of-8 foul shooting. Thompson scored eight of his 14 points during the 13-0 run.
The decisive stretch of basketball took under three minutes to push USF's lead into double figures, and the Golden Bears never fully recovered. Sioux Falls pushed the lead to as much as 17 points with just over eight minutes to play and they kept the lead in double-figures until 1:11 to play when Coblin buried a three-pointer to cut it to 76-67.
CSP would trim the margin to seven points twice in the final minute, as well.
Junior
Cody Carlson was Concordia's third player in double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting while freshman
George Scharlau added eight points and Shields finished with seven.
Five Cougars reached double-figures on the night, with Teathloach Pal contributing the game's lone double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to pair with the USF scoring leaders Grinde and Thompson.
