The Golden Bears improve their record after a win over Jamestown

The women's basketball team defeated the Jimmies 86-73

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team is now 3-3 after defeating Jamestown (N.D) 86-73 at the Gangelhoff Center on Saturday evening. The Jimmies record falls to 6-3 overall after their loss to the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears now have a 6-0 all-time record with the University of Jamestown since their first meeting in 2013.

The Golden Bears were hot when they hit the floor in the first quarter and dominated the scoreboard 20-10 after the first ten minutes. Jamestown couldn't get shots up against the Bears defense and only shot 9.1% from the field in the first quarter which included the first made layup of the game. The rest of the Jimmies eight points came from free throws after CSP committed nine fouls towards UJ.

Jamestown came out with more energy in the second quarter and increased their shooting percentage to 56.3% but CSP responded with the same intensity. Outscoring the Jimmies by only one point in the second quarter, the Bears shot 64.7% from the field and 71.4% from the three-point line. Danielle Schaub was the major contributor in the second quarter as she put up her first 11 points of the game with three three-pointers and two layups. Cassidy Byrd also drowned the threes as she scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. The duo's efficiency from the field kept the Bears ahead 47-36 at the half.

The third quarter shifted the other way for a little under five minutes when the Jimmies went on a 7-0 run to close the gap on the scoreboard. With nine seconds to go in the third, Jamestown forward Noelle Josephson snagged the defensive rebound off a Golden Bear's missed three-pointer and threw it up the court for the fast break layup at the buzzer from UJ guard Hannah DeMars. The layup gave the Jimmies the advantage going into the final ten minutes of the game as they led 60-59.

It was a free-throw competition in the fourth quarter as CSP had 15 single point opportunities at the line and UJ had ten. Overall, the Golden Bears had 28 team fouls and four players in foul trouble by the time the game ended. The Jimmies brought back their momentum from the third quarter and kept the score deficit within single digits until the final minutes of the game. Sophomore Sydney Schultz had a standout quarter as she drove the lane to finish a layup and snatched two massive offensive rebounds to pull the Golden Bears back into the game.

Schultz finished the game with nine points going 80% from the field and 100% from the three-point line. Schaub was the leading scorer for the Bears with a new career-high of 19 points and four assists. Sophomore Meghan DuBois was 50% from the field and finished with 17 points. Byrd ended the night with 11 points and six rebounds and junior Riley Wheatcraft led the squad in rebounds with seven rebounds while also putting up 11 points.

As a team, Concordia shot 49.2% overall, 41.7% from the three-point line, and 66.7% from the free throw line after finishing 18 out of 27. They held the Jimmies to a 39.3% shooting percentage and 20% from beyond the arc.

Freshman forward Hannah DeMars was the strong player for Jamestown scoring 14 points and grabbing four steals. Kia Tower was right behind her with 12 points as the freshman shot 75% from the free-throw line.

The Golden Bears will stay home for their next weekend of games as they see their first pair of conference teams of the 2019-20 season on December 6th and 7th.  CSP will tip-off against Sioux Falls at 5:30 p.m. next Friday at the Gangelhoff Center and Southwest Minnesota State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
