Second half surge sinks Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon

Scharlau and Carlson each reach double figures for CSP

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (0-2) saw Hillsdale (2-2) pull away in the second half in a 65-49 loss on Saturday afternoon as CSP dropped their second game in the Parkside Invitational presented by HARIBO.

It was a defensive battle in the tournament's consolation game as the Golden Bears limited the Chargers to just 36.5% (23-63) from the floor and 15.0% (3-20) from deep, but they were held to 35.2% (19-54) and 15.0% (3-20) on the other end in the loss.

Rebounding and turnovers played a major role in the game as Hillsdale forced 17 CSP turnovers and turned them into 21 points while committing 12 for 12 points. A 45-34 edge on the glass also held to a 10-3 advantage in second chance points as well.

George Scharlau provided a bright spot off the bench while Cody Carlson reached double figures for the second straight game to start the year. Scharlau connected on 4-7 from the floor and 2-5 from three-point range to finish with 11 points and five rebounds while Carlson knocked down 4-7 for 11 points in the loss. Perion Little added seven points and five boards as well.

Dylan Lowry paced the Chargers with 17 points, seven boards and five assists while Davis Larson and Patrick Cartier each chipped in 15 points apiece on the day.

The Golden Bears found themselves in an early 8-3 hole just over five minutes into the game before seeing the lead reach six at 12-6 at the 13:10 mark. Concordia responded with 12 of the next 15 points, capped by a bucket from Jordan Coblin and back-to-back threes from George Scharlau to take their first lead since the opening moments at 18-15 with just over seven to play in the half. CSP's lead eventually reached four later in the half as they remained out front as late as 28-27 with 2:15 on the clock, but HC grabbed the final three points to take a 30-28 lead into the break.

Concordia tied it up with a Carlos Barela jumper on the first possession of the second half, but Hillsdale quickly regained the lead with two straight layups. The deficit reached three possessions at 45-38 with 13:39 to play before growing to double figures 52-40 nearly five minutes later. The Chargers extended their advantage out to as many as 18 before settling with a final score of 65-49.

The Golden Bears kick off their home slate this week as they play host to North Central in non-conference play on Thursday at 6 p.m.
