Berkland wins it for the Golden Bears in overtime

CSP remains undefeated as they were victorious over SMSU 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – An overtime goal by sophomore Jena Berkland wins it for #22 Concordia-St. Paul (9-0-2, 6-0-2 NSIC) over Southwest Minnesota State (6-4, 4-4 NSIC) 1-0 at Sea Foam Stadium on a windy rainy Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears now have 20 conference points on the year and are still in second place in the NSIC.
 
With the win, the Bears even up the series with the Mustangs, as CSP now has a 11-11-1 record when facing SMSU. The Golden Bears earned their fifth win over the Mustangs at home and are an even .500 when playing at Sea Foam Stadium.
  
 The first half was filled with offensive chances for the Golden Bears. CSP outshot SMSU 10-3, with four shots on goal to the Mustangs two. The Golden Bears had three corner kicks and the Mustangs had two corner kicks chances in the first half. In the 14th minute Katie Anderson had a scoring chance as she tried to shoot from deep out of the box, but it was stopped by SMSU's keeper Amanda Haimes. Alex Lotts had a chance for the Mustangs in the 16th minute when she tried to go bottom right, but Jordyn Clark shuffled to make the save. The Bears had a scoring chance in the 21st minute when Jackie Ehlert hit one off of the crossbar and a minute later Jena Berkland tried to go bottom left, but it was stopped by Haimes. Alex Lotts had another scoring chance for the Mustangs in the 26th minute of play as she tried to go over the head of Clark, but Clark was able to get a leaping glove on the ball and deflected it over the net. CSP had another scoring chance in the 30th minute when Katie Anderson tried to go low on Haimes but she got down to make the save. 
 
In the Second half the Golden Bears continued their dominance as they outshot the Mustangs 12-5 with four shots on goal to SMUS's one shot on goal. Alex Lots had the first scoring chance of the half in the 53rd minute as she tried to bottom right on Jordyn Clark, but she made the save. The Golden Bears had a chance in the 55th minute when Alexa Hepner hit the crossbar on a free kick and senior Hannah Pavek picked up the rebound but went wide left. Freshman Katie Anderson had another scoring chance for the Bears in the 62nd minute when she shot from outside of the 18-yard box, but it was stopped by Haimes. Leah Johnson had a scoring chance for CSP in the 64th as she tried to go top left, but it was stopped by a leaping Haimes. Another chance for the Golden Bears came in the 73rd minute when Jena Berkland tried to get CSP on the board but Haimes came up with the big save. In the last minute of the half, senior Hannah Pedersen went one on one with the keeper and had a chance to put the game away, but she missed the net wide and after 90 minutes of soccer this game headed into overtime to decide a winner. 
 
It took only one minute and 18 seconds for Jena Berkland to break through the Mustang defenders and score the game winning goal for the Golden Bears. Berkland ran through multiple SMSU defenders and fired a shot in the box and found the top right back of the net to win the game. This was Berklands second goal of the season as the Golden Bears remain undefeated on the year. 
 
Jordyn Clark recorded the victory and played all 91 minutes making three saves and faced eight shots. Clark and the Golden Bears defense recorded their eighth shutout of the season. Amanda Haimes played all 91 minutes for the Mustangs making eight saves in the game.
 
The Golden Bears outshot the Mustangs 23-8 and outshot them 9-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Bears had 10 corner kicks and the Mustangs had four. Katie Anderson once again led the offense for the Bears, she recorded six shots with four finding their way on the net. Jena Berkland had three shots on goal one of them being the game winner, Leah Johnson and Hannah Pedersen each recorded a shot on goal in the Golden Bears victory. 
 
With this victory, the Golden Bears capped off a homecoming weekend in which all of their home were victorious. It started with the Esports team recording their first ever win on Thursday night, followed by both the soccer and volleyball teams winning on Friday night. On Saturday, the football team defeated Moorhead and the volleyball team defeated Sioux Falls. And today CSP saw their soccer team defeat SMSU in overtime capping off the homecoming sweep for the Golden Bears. 
 
 Head coach Steve Bellis commented on his team overtime victory, "The team showed a lot of character and continued to outshoot them out through the game and untimely deserved the result. We are taking a lot of positives out of this game from our determination and grittiness. It was great to see our keeper come up big for us as when we needed her. Very proud of our teams' character and determination in this game." 
 
The Golden Bears will be back at home next weekend for a huge game against Bemidji State on Friday night at 7 p.m. CSP will continue their homestand on Sunday when they host Minnesota Crookston for an afternoon game at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Sea Foam Stadium.
