Perimeter shooting buries Golden Bears on Saturday night

UMD's Plamann hits nine threes on the night

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears men's basketball team (8-10, 3-9 NSIC) saw Minnesota Duluth (10-6, 7-5 NSIC) catch fire from beyond the arc in the first half as CSP fell 93-63 on Saturday night at Gangelhoff Center.

One night after connecting on a program-record 19 threes, the Golden Bears saw the Bulldogs flip the script and hit 16 threes on just 27 attempts (59.3%) against them to pull away for the win. UMD snapped a six-game losing streak at Gangelhoff Center as they dropped Concordia to 13-15 in the all-time series.

Hunter Plamann was the main culprit in the three-point shooting barrage as he hit his first nine threes of the night to finish at 9-10 from deep with a game-high 31 points. Brandon Myer also filled the stat sheet in a big way as he contributed 25 points on 9-10 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range as well as seven boards, six assists and two blocks.

Minnesota Duluth also held a 46-27 edge on the glass as well as a 32-22 edge in points in the paint on the night.

Concordia was unable to replicate their success from beyond the arc as they hit just 7-30 (23.3%) from deep and 22-62 (35.5%) overall. They did, however, manage a 21-11 advantage in bench scoring and a 12-8 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Bryndan Matthews paced CSP with 16 points on 6-9 shooting while Noah Kannegiesser added 14 points and Isaiah McKaychipped in 12.

The Golden Bears took a 3-2 lead on an early three from Cody Carlson, but that proved to be their only lead of the contest as the Bulldogs put together a dominant opening 20 minutes. UMD scored the next seven straight to take the lead for good before pushing their edge to nine at 21-12 at the 13:04 mark. Following a CSP bucket, the Bulldogs caught fire and scored 10 in a row to balloon the lead out to 17 at 31-14. The lead remained at 17 at 39-22 before another Minnesota Duluth run, this time a 13-0 burst capped by three three-pointers, pushed the lead all the way out to 30. The two teams traded threes in the final minute of the half to bring the score to 55-25 at the break.

Concordia trimmed it to 25 early in the second half before pulled as close as 23 later one, but the Bulldogs remained in control the rest of the way to seal a 93-63 victory.

CSP hits the road next weekend as they travel to Augustana on Saturday and Wayne State on Sunday.
