ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (12-4, 8-3 NSIC) defeated St. Cloud State 63-50 (10-5, 7-4 NSIC) Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center.
Down by two midway through the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears closed the game strong. CSP ripped off a 18-3 run from the 5:30 mark to the final buzzer to finish off the Huskies, including a 12-0 burst. Two big threes by Lexi Lee propelled the Golden Bears to take and maintain the lead. They took a 50-47 lead on the first three and extended their edge to 55-47 on her second swish from downtown.
Lindsay Dorr led the Golden Bears with 19 points and 11 rebounds, collecting her 7th double-double of the season and her third in as many games. Dorr shot 7-14 (50%) and also had two blocks in the win. The senior center has now scored 14+ points in 15 of 16 games this season.
Three other Golden Bears also finished in double digits, including Kyrah Fredenburg, who also collected a double-double. It was the second straight game with a double-double for the senior guard, as she went for 10 points and 13 rebounds. Lee also scored 13 points, while Anna Schmitt added 12 points, seven assists, and four rebounds.
Concordia moved to 9-0 on their home floor, and now has won eight of their last nine games. The Golden Bears snapped St. Cloud State's four-game winning streak, and now are tied 17-17 against the Huskies in the all-time series. CSP has won eight of the last 10 games against SCSU.
Four Huskies scored in double digits, but only five SCSU players scored in the game. Mallie Doucette led the way with 13 points for St. Cloud State.
Concordia held the Huskies to 29.2% shooting on game, including 16.7% in the fourth quarter. This was the third time in the last six games that CSP has held their opponent to under 30% shooting.
The game started off with a variety of runs for both teams, as Concordia got off to a 7-0 start. The Huskies would score five straight points before another 7-0 run for the Golden Bears put them up 14-5. The scoreboard would read 15-9 going into the second quarter.
The Golden Bears were able to to get off to a good start in the second quarter, and led 22-13 after a Anna Schmitt swipe and score with 6:15 left in the half. The Huskies used the three-point shot to get back into the game, and eventually take a lead before halftime. St. Cloud State went on a 19-8 run to close the half, capped by a half court buzzer beater by Mackenzie Uter. The Huskies hit four threes in the second quarter run to claim the lead.
Both teams locked down on defense in the third quarter, as CSP shot 25.0% while SCSU was 26.7% from the field. Concordia was able to regain the lead going into the fourth quarter, as the scoreboard read 41-40 going into final frame.
The Golden Bears and the Huskies traded baskets for a majority of the fourth quarter and the game was within three points for much of the ten-minute period. With the Huskies leading 47-45 with 5:30 to go in the game, the Golden Bears went on a 12-0 run, holding SCSU scoreless for nearly five minutes. CSP closed the game out at the free throw line, hitting 8-8 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes.
Concordia led in points off of turnovers (13-8), points in the paint (26-18), second-chance points (10-5), and fast-break points (7-3). They also outrebounded the Huskies 47-35.
Concordia will return to the Gangelhoff Center tomorrow afternoon to take on Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs are 9-2 in the NSIC, and will present another tough challenge for CSP. If you can't make it to the game, you can watch it live at
