ST. CLOUD, Minn. – For the fourth time in five years, the Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (5-0-1, 2-0-1 NSIC) tied St. Cloud State (2-3-2, 2-1-1 NSIC) after 110 minutes of play. This time the Golden Bears and Huskies each scored once in the second half, ending in a 1-1 tie at Husky Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Concordia is now 3-10-5 in their all-time series history with St. Cloud State. Last season, the Bears took home a 1-0 road win against the Huskies, but had tied SCSU in their previous three meetings.
Freshman
Jena Berkland was the one who found the back of the net for the Golden Bears, evening up the score at one goal apiece in the 70
th minute. The Illinois native scored off a corner kick play, as
Mary Kaiser's kick bounced around in the box a little before Berkland put it away. Senior
Katri Gifford picked up the assist on the play.
This was Berkland's third goal on the season and she is now tied with senior
Brooke Salo, leading the Bears in points with seven. Gifford now has three assists on the season, surpassing her season-high two assists that she compiled in 2016.
Both teams played tough in the first half, as each team only allowed their opponent to take two shots throughout the first 45 minutes. CSP fired both of their shots on goal, with
Jordan Rowan-Stafford and Kaiser each challenging the St. Cloud goalie, freshman Zoe Welsch.
After the break, Concordia held a 7-3 edge in shots in the second half, but it was St. Cloud State who got on the board first. Junior Hannah Marion broke open in the box, taking a pass from Nicole Friis and getting a shot by
Jordyn Clark, who started in net for the Golden Bears. Marion's goal came in the 52
nd minute, giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.
After the 60
th minute the Bears took over, not allowing St. Cloud State to take another shot in the final 30 minutes of regulation and taking seven shots of their own, including Berkland's goal, which came in the 70
th minute of play.
The Golden Bears carried over this momentum into the overtime frames, holding a 5-2 advantage in shots. Their best chance to score came from another Kaiser corner kick in the first overtime when sophomore
Haleigh Bares headed a shot that went off the crossbar, just missing a game-winning goal. However, neither team was able to capitalize on their chances, giving the Bears their first tie of the 2018 season.
CSP held an overall 14-7 margin in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Berkland led the way with three shots and a goal, but Rowan-Stafford, Kaiser, and
Jade Weller each fired two shots of their own. Clark and junior
Emily Nelson shared the goalkeeping duties, combining for three saves throughout the game.
The Bears' road trip continues on Sunday when they take on Minnesota Duluth at James S. Malosky Stadium at 1 p.m. Live stats and a video feed will be available and the links can be found at the top of the page or on the soccer schedule page.
