Golden Bears head north for first NSIC road games

CSP will face St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth this weekend as they look to stay undefeated

ST. PAUL, Minn. – In their next conference matchups, the Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (5-0, 2-0 NSIC) will travel to St. Cloud State (2-3-1, 2-1 NSIC) and Minnesota Duluth (2-4, 1-2 NSIC), facing the Huskies on Friday and the Bulldogs on Sunday. Both games are set to kickoff at 1 p.m.

The Golden Bears enter their second weekend of conference play with their best record since the 2001 season and their first 2-0 NSIC start since 2006. The 5-0 overall record also marks the best start that the Bears have had in head coach Steve Bellis' eight years at Concordia.

CSP is one of only two teams in the NSIC that remains undefeated, as #14 Bemidji State currently has a 6-0 record and the other 14 teams have posted at least one loss. In addition, the Golden Bears are among the four teams that remain undefeated in conference play, joined by #14 Bemidji State, #17 Minnesota State, and Augustana.

LAST TIME OUT
In their home and conference opening weekend, the Bears defeated both Upper Iowa and Winona State, earning the full six points with the two wins.

The team scored once in each half against the Peacocks to come away with a 2-1 victory. Senior forward Brooke Salo scored first in the sixth minute of the game, heading in a goal from a corner kick taken by teammate Mary Kaiser. Upper Iowa tied it up before the break, scoring on a free kick from about 15 yards out, but it was CSP's Jordan Rowan-Stafford who scored the game-winner. The Oakdale native found the back of the net in the 60th minute, getting around a defender and burying a shot in the top left of the goal. Goalie Jordyn Clark saved the two shots that came her way in the final 30 minutes of play, allowing the Bears to walk away with the 2-1 win.

Sunday's game against Winona State was also a close battle, as both teams were tied at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. Coming out of the halftime break, it did not take long for Concordia to break the tie, as Salo scored for the second time in the weekend, this time taking a pass from Katri Gifford and scoring from about ten yards out.

ST. CLOUD STATE SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears hold a 3-10-4 all-time record when facing the Huskies, but have not lost to them since 2013. From 2014 to 2016, the two teams played three games that ended in ties, and last season's game ended with a 1-0 win for the Bears. 12 of the 17 games in the series have been decided by one goal or less and there have been six games that have gone to at least one overtime. When playing on the road, as they do this weekend, CSP is 1-6-1 against St. Cloud State.

LAST MEETING VS SCSU
In last year's contest, the Bears defeated St. Cloud 1-0, with Salo scoring in the 55th minute to help CSP earn the victory. The goal came from a set piece when Jade Weller took a free kick from 30 yards out and Salo finished the play with a header goal.

Clark recorded the win in net, making five saves throughout the contest, and it was the team's second shutout of the year. The Huskies held an 11-6 advantage in shots and 5-3 edge in shots on goal, but it was the Bears who capitalized on their chances to come away with their first win over SCSU since the 2008 season.

ABOUT THE HUSKIES
St. Cloud State is 2-3-1 on the year with a 2-1 NSIC record. The Huskies have posted losses to Northern Michigan, #1 Central Missouri, and #14 Bemidji State, wins over Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota Crookston, and a tie with Michigan Tech. They are most recently coming off a 1-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.

The team returns 22 players, while adding five freshman. Among the returning players are three that have all scored two goals so far this season, in seniors Maria Kass and Maria Witte, and junior Hannah Marion. Two of their freshman, Claire Shea and Grace Butler, have also gotten involved in the scoring action, each scoring once. Their offense is also fairly versatile, as five different players have tallied assists on the year. Freshman Zoe Welsh has been the main goalie for the Huskies, posting a 2-1-1 record with a .750 save percentage.

As a team, the Huskies have scored eight goals, averaging 1.33 goals per game. The team takes 12.5 shots on average and has a .107 shot percentage. 48 of their 75 shots have been on goal, posting a .640 shot on goal percentage on the year.

MINNESOTA DULUTH SERIES HISTORY
Concordia has a 1-17-3 record against the Bulldogs, but have gone 1-0-2 in their last three contests with Duluth. The Bulldogs had a tight grasp on the series, winning every game from 1999-2014, but in 2015 the Golden Bears snapped their winning streak with a 1-0 win at Sea Foam Stadium. CSP has yet to win a game outright against the Bulldogs on the road, as they have a 0-10-2 record when playing in Duluth.

LAST MEETING VS UMD
In their last meeting, two overtimes was not enough to decide a winner, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Hannah Pavek got the Bears on the board first, scoring in the 10th minute. Leah Johnson added another goal for Concordia, scoring in the 35th minute to help the Bears head into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs did not go away quietly, though, and scored two goals of their own in the second half to force overtime.

Neither team got a shot off in the first overtime, and CSP held a 2-1 shot advantage in the second overtime, but both teams failed to convert, forcing the game to end in a tie. The Bulldogs held a 17-14 margin in shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on goal throughout the contest.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Minnesota Duluth is 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in the conference. They have lost to Michigan Tech, North Dakota, St. Cloud State, and #14 Bemidji State, but have defeated Northern Michigan and Minnesota Crookston. In their most recent conference games, the Bulldogs won 3-0 over Minnesota Crookston and lost 2-1 against #14 Bemidji State.

The Bulldogs have 23 returning players from their 2017 roster and have added six new players for this season. Six different players have scored for the team so far, with freshman Julia Osborne leading the way with two goals and an assist. Both Sisley Ng and Carlye Wright have seen significant time in net for UMD, with both posting a 1-2 record on the year. Ng has 16 saves so far for a .762 save percentage and Wright has tallied 10 saves for a .714 save percentage.

The team has scored seven goals this season, but has outshot their opponents 88-65, despite averaging less goals per game (1.17-1.50). The majority of their goals, five out of seven, have all been scored in the second half. The Bulldogs take an average of 14.7 shots per game, and over half of their shots have been on goal.
