SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In day two of the NSIC Playoff Tournament the #8 seeded Concordia-St. Paul softball team (30-23) dropped their first game of the tournament to #3 seed Minnesota Duluth (40-11). The Golden Bears held a 2-0 lead for the majority of the game, but the Bulldogs rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to come away with the win. The Bears now move to the losers' side of the bracket where they will face Southwest Minnesota State in an elimination game.
Leading the CSP offense was senior first baseman
Haley Schanks, who went 3-3 with two singles and a home run. Junior
Carlie Hart also tallied three hits throughout the game, including hitting her sixth triple of the year. Junior
Justine Schattner was the final Golden Bear to record a hit, driving a single down the left field line and then earning a walk later in the game.
For the third game in a row, the Bears got on the board in the first inning, when Schanks hit a two-run bomb to left field, driving in Schattner, who had singled in the previous at-bat. This was the fifth home run of the year for Schanks and her 31
st and 32
nd RBIs this season.
The Bears also had solid opportunities to score in the top of the third and fifth, having Hart at third base in both innings, but were unable to get her across.
The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the fifth to take over the lead. Runners on second and third were driven in by a shallow fly ball to right field to tie it up, and they gained the lead hitting a three-run home run to right field.
Despite having two runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, the Bears were held scoreless, allowing Minnesota Duluth to come away with the win.
Aryka Knoche started in the circle for the Bears, throwing the first 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight UMD hits.
Kali Kaestner came in to relieve Knoche and got the last two outs without giving up a hit. Knoche took the loss, falling to 14-11 on the year.
Concordia will now play against Southwest Minnesota State at Sherman Park in an elimination game. If the Bears win, they will play again tomorrow, March 5
th, against either Augustana or Northern State at 10 a.m. at Bowden Field.
