Baseball announces schedule changes for this weekend

CSP moved to Sunday and Monday at Minnetonka High School

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul (11-3, 4-0 NSIC) head baseball coach Mark "Lunch" McKenzie has announced this weekend's four game series with St. Cloud State (9-6, 2-1 NSIC) has been pushed back to Sunday and Monday in addition to being moved to Veterans Field in Minnetonka. The Golden Bears are also scheduled to take on Bemidji State (4-12, 2-2 NSIC) on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Field.

SCHEDULE INFORMATION
Due to snow in the forecast on Saturday, the decision was made to push play back to Sunday and Monday. The scheduled time for the first pitch remains unchanged for Sunday with first pitch in the series opener set for noon at Veterans Field. Barring weather cooperation, first pitch for Monday's doubleheader with the Huskies is currently scheduled for 11 a.m. to complete the weekend series. Tuesday's doubleheader with Bemidji State has also been moved to Veterans Field with first pitch moved up to 11 a.m.

LIVE COVERAGE
Live stats will be available to follow online for all six games, while the athletic department will produce a one camera video webcast of Monday and Tuesday's games with play-by-play provided by Dan Flanagan. The Voice of the Golden Bears since 2008, Flanagan is a St. Paul native and a graduate of Fordham University in New York where he specialized in radio broadcasting.

LAST TIME OUT
Concordia picked up four consecutive shutouts against Minnesota Crookston to claim the weekend sweep at Minnetonka in the opening weekend of NSIC play.

The Golden Bears extended their streak to 47.1 consecutive scoreless innings as they have now thrown six straight shutouts dating back to game one of a doubleheader against NSU on March 10. On the weekend, CSP allowed just 11 hits in 32.0 innings while striking out 53, resulting in a .105 opponent batting average. At the plate, the Golden Bears put up 19 runs on 33 hits while also drawing 16 walks for a .297 batting average and a.402 on-base percentage.

Leading the staff, Josh Gaworski threw the second no-hitter in DII-era history at CSP as he struck out 14 and walked two in his 7.0 innings of work in a 15-0 game three win. Gus Varland also threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 1-0 game one win while his brother Louie Varland added 7.0 innings of five-hit ball with eight strikeouts in a 2-0 game four win. Zach Lauzon tied the DII-era record at CSP with 16 strikeouts in 8.1 shutout innings while allowing four hits in a 1-0 game two win.

PUTTING UP ZEROES
The Golden Bears head into the series with the Huskies riding a six-game winning streak dating back to game two of a doubleheader against Northern State on March 10. During that span, CSP has not allowed a single run as they have rattled off six consecutive shutouts. Including the final inning and a third of game one of the NSU doubleheader, Concordia's scoreless inning streak currently sits at 47.1.

As a staff during their six-game shutout streak, Concordia has incredibly allowed just 17 hits, 16 of which singles, over 46.0 innings while striking out a massive 74 hitters. The result has been a .112 opponent batting average, .211 opponent on-base percentage and a .118 opponent slugging percentage during the stretch.

IN THE POLLS
Following their impressive weekend sweep in which they did not allow a run, the Golden Bears moved into the top 10 in the latest NCBWA Central Region Poll. Concordia earned 17 points in this week's poll to move into 10th, three points behind this weekend's opponent, St. Cloud State. CSP and SCSU are joined by Augustana in second and Minnesota State in fifth to represent the NSIC in the rankings.

SCSU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears enter the weekend with a record of 14-29-1 in 44 previous meetings with the Huskies. After CSP rattled off six wins in 10 meetings from 2007-10, SCSU took control in the series with an 18-3 mark over the next 21 meetings. Since last season, however, the contests have been split nearly evenly as St. Cloud State has claimed four wins and Concordia has claimed three.

LAST MEETING WITH THE HUSKIES
Back on March 7 in Arizona at the Tucson Invitational Games, the Golden Bears held on for a 6-5 victory against St. Cloud State in non-conference action. CSP took a 6-1 lead through five innings before seeing the Huskies grab two runs in both the seventh and eighth to turn up the heat, but the Golden Bears maintained their edge to pick up a 6-5 victory.

The Golden Bear offense hammered out 14 hits in the win as four different players registered multi-hit games. Patrick Bordewick and Drew Sannes each hit safely in three of their four trips to the plate with an RBI apiece to lead the way while Connor Trygstad continued to be an offensive force with his second homer of the season to go along with another single in the game. Ben Suits also collected two hits, including a double, in his first start of the season.

Josh Gaworski gave CSP a solid start as he worked 5.0 innings, allowing just a pair of hits and a run, while striking out five to grab his first win as a Golden Bear. Nate Stolte and Keanu Mendez each worked out of the bullpen before Shane Benson finished off the game by picking up the final five outs to earn the save.

BSU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and Beavers have met 61 previous times heading into next week's meeting with Concordia holding a 37-24 edge in the all-time series. BSU got off to a fast start with wins in the first eight meetings until 2003, but CSP has taken control since then. The Beavers put together their best stretch in recent history from 2014-15 as they won four of five contests, but the Golden Bears have answered back by sweeping the season series in each of the last two seasons as a part of a seven game winning streak against Bemidji State. At home, CSP holds a 16-10 record and at a neutral site they have gone 7-6.

LAST MEETING WITH THE BEAVERS
In last season's doubleheader with Bemidji State, Concordia took game one 6-3 before grabbing a 13-2 win in in eight innings in game two.

The Golden Bears held an edge in nearly every statistical category. The Golden Bears slashed .348/.436/.500 as a team compared to .154/.258/.173 for the Beavers. On the mound, Concordia held an edge of 3.00 to 9.00 in ERA and 17 to 5 in strikeouts as well. CSP also committed just one error while the Beavers had five.

Concordia received production from several places in the lineup, but Isaac HormannRoch Whittaker and Tanner Holmquist led the way with at least four hits apiece.

Hormann slashed an impressive .714/.778/1.286 as he was retired just twice in nine trips to the plate. He also drove in four and scored three, including falling a triple shy of the cycle in game two.

Whittaker picked up four hits in six trips (.667 average) to go along with a pair of walks as he picked up two hits and drove in two runs in each game.

Holmquist registered five hits in nine at-bats, including his first homer of the year, while scoring three and driving in two to go along with a steal.
