Concordia coasts to non-conference win over Yellowjackets

Golden Bears sprint past UW-Superior with extended mid-game run

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-1) used a 35-8 mid-game run to pull away from Wisconsin-Superior (0-1) for a 95-58 non-conference win on Tuesday evening at Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears and Yellowjackets were knotted at 32 with 5:37 to play in the first half when they used a 14-1 run to open up the game's first double-digit lead, going into the break up by 15, 53-38.

The run continued in the second half, using a 12-0 spurt to open up a 27-point advantage, 67-40 with 4:45 to play in the third quarter.

Combined, with everything in between, the Golden Bears outscored UW-Superior 35-8 in the stretch of nearly 11 minutes of basketball. Concordia maintained at least a 24 point lead the rest of the night, leading by as many as 39 points with just under two minutes to play in the contest.

Senior center Lindsay Dorr led Concordia with 22 points and seven rebounds as she continues her strong start. She shot 11-of-15 from the floor, doing her damage in just 24 minutes.

Sophomore forward Sidney Wentland had her breakout performance with 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench. She was lights-out from everywhere, making 8-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from three while adding five rebounds.

Senior guard Anna Schmitt added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 2-of-3 three-point shooting, also collecting eight rebounds and dishing out three assists.

It was a total team effort, though, as 11 players scored with six players scoring at least six points. The squad shot 54.1 percent (40-74) from the field and buried 10 three-pointers at a 38.5 percent clip (10-26).

CSP held UWS to 36.2 percent (21-58) shooting and a 9-to-18 assist-turnover margin. Concordia countered with 29 assists on 40 made field goals and a 29-to-13 assist-turnover margin.

Concordia also out-muscled UWS with a 45-31 edge on the glass, and despite the big shooting advantage, the Golden Bears held a 16-to-9 margin on the offensive glass and a 52-28 scoring advantage in the paint.

Senior guard Kyrah Fredenburg was a main culprit in the all-around play, hitting 3-of-5 from the field for six points, adding eight rebounds (three offensive) with four assists.

The Yellowjackets were led by Hannah Norlin's 20 points and 10 rebounds as the senior center was 9-of-18 from the field. Emily Carpenter added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, but the rest of the squad combined to make just eight shots in 32 attempts (25.0%).

Concordia has the next week and a half off after a 2-1 start, and will return home for its Thanksgiving Classic at Gangelhoff Center where they'll play Northern Michigan on Friday, November 3 and Jamestown (N.D.) on Sunday, November 5 with a pair of 2 p.m. tip-offs.
