SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (6-1-3, 3-1-3 NSIC) held Sioux Falls (4-6-1, 3-4-1 NSIC) to a 0-0 tie on the road on Friday afternoon. This is the third time that the Golden Bears have ended in a tie this year, also tying St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth earlier this season.
The 0-0 score marks the first time that the Cougars and the Bears have tied in their nine game all-time series and CSP now holds a 7-1-1 record against Sioux Falls.
The Concordia defense compiled their sixth shutout of the 2018 season, only allowing one shot on goal throughout the game. The team has now played 200 straight minutes without allowing a goal. Junior
Jordyn Clark remains unbeaten in net, as she is now 5-0-2 on the year.
The Golden Bears held possession for the majority of the game, posting a 28-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. This is a season-high in shots for the Bears and the team also had eight chances off of corner kicks.
Eleven different players fired shots for the Bears, with seven of those players taking more than one shot. Seniors
Brooke Salo and
Jordan Rowan-Stafford led the offensive charge, each tallying five shots apiece.
In the first half, Concordia recorded the first four shots before allowing Sioux Falls to threaten. USF took a corner kick in the 17
th minute and took two of their three shots of the half off of this opportunity. After the 23
rd minute, the Bears did not allow another shot for the rest of the half, while taking six more of their own. However, CSP was unable to capitalize on this disparity and it remained tied at zero at the halftime break.
The Bears had many chances in the second half as well, outshooting the Cougars 9-4. In the first fifteen minutes Concordia had two set piece chances within 40 yards, but both were successfully cleared by the Cougars. Ten minutes later, Weller set up another solid opportunity for CSP, placing a corner kick that bounced around in the box before it was kicked out of danger. As regulation time winded down, the Bears continued to attack, taking two shots and a corner kick within the last minute of play. The game remained tied and headed into overtime.
The Golden Bears were dominate in the two overtime periods, holding a 9-0 advantage in shots. Among their chances was a shot by freshman
Jena Berkland that hit the crossbar in the 92
nd minute. After that, the Bears put a shot on goal and had one miss just high before the first 10 minute overtime expired. In the second overtime frame, Concordia took five shots, two of which were on goal. Despite all of this offensive pressure, the USF defense held tight, forcing the game to end in a 0-0 tie.
The Bears continue their road trip on Sunday, October 7
