ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul's soccer team (4-1-1, 2-0-1 NSIC) remains unbeaten in conference play as they defeated the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs (0-6, 0-4 NSIC) 2-1 Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears are now unbeaten in the past four games they have played with wins over Viterbo, St. Cloud State, and Southwest and a tie against Minnesota Duluth. The last time that the Bears had a four game unbeaten streak was in late September to early October of 2015. This is also the first time that CSP has started the conference schedule with a 2-0-1 record or better since the 2006 season.
In last year's matchup, the Bears also won 2-1 with then sophomore
Jade Weller scoring the game-winner. This year, it was Weller who opened up the scoring for the Golden Bears with a goal in the 10th minute that found the bottom right corner of the net off a pass from teammate
Brooke Salo. This was Weller's second goal of the year, making her the first Golden Bear to score multiple goals this season. Salo tallied her second assist of the season on the play.
The Mustangs immediately answered with a goal of their own, coming under a minute after Weller's goal. Sophomore forward Alexandra Miskowiec got past CSP's defenders and buried the ball in the bottom left corner of the net to even things up. Her teammate Amanda Hartmann was credited with the assist.
The rest of the half would remain scoreless, with Concordia holding the shot advantage over Southwest (9-5). The Golden Bears had the ball in the Mustang box a number of times in the last five minutes of the half to keep things exciting. Freshman
Kiara Myers was neck and neck with an SMSU defender heading toward the Mustang net but was unable to get enough power behind her shot, allowing the goalie to make an easy save. Freshman midfielder
Abby Diedrich also made a nice cross pass with under a minute left in the half, but CSP was unable to get another touch on it and would enter the halftime in a 1-1 draw.
The second half had a lot of dominate play by the Bears leading to a number of scoring chances. In the 63
rd minute, Salo fired a beautiful shot from about 30 yards out but it hit the crossbar. Junior midfielder
Jordan Rowan-Stafford had another close attempt just over a minute later, with her shot getting past the goalie but it was blocked just in time by a Mustang defender before it could go all the way in.
It was Rowan-Stafford who would come up with the game-winner for the Golden Bears. In the 83
rd minute of play she took a pass from sophomore
Hannah Pedersen and launched it over the goalie from about 30 yards out to lift the Bears to the 2-1 victory. This was Rowan-Stafford's second goal of the year and Pedersen's third assist. The Bears would end the game with a 22-8 shot advantage.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jordyn Clark recorded three saves on the night and remains unbeaten at 3-0-1.
The Golden Bears have a day off before they take on Sioux Falls on Sunday, September 24
