ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul softball (15-28, 7-15 NSIC) honored its five player senior class on Saturday in between victories in a doubleheader sweep of MSU Moorhead (8-31, 3-19 NSIC) at Carlander Field.
The day's importance was not lost on the five players, who were all starters in the lineup in both games as they combined to get hits in 15 of 27 at bats, score 12 and drive in 11 runs as CSP won 12-1 and 6-5 over the Dragons.
Senior first baseman
Liz Jarosz provided the power, going 3-6 with seven RBI, hitting the game-ending grand slam in game one to end the game in the fifth inning before hitting a first inning two run triple to tie the game, scoring the go-ahead run for an early 3-2 lead. Jarosz is second in career home runs with 31 and second in single season home runs at Concordia with 13 which leads the Northern Sun. Her 30 RBI during NSIC play also leads the conference.
Her thrilling finish to game one sealed the win in the circle for senior right handed pitcher and designated player
Linzy Heim, who pitched the complete game to pick up the win, improving to 9-12 as she allowed just a run on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk. After allowing the game's leadoff hitter to reach and score in the first inning, Heim was unhittable. She scattered just a single and a walk from the second inning on, retiring the final seven batters she faced including four via the strikeout.
Heim helped her own case, too, hitting a leadoff homer to spark a five run second inning in which she also hit an RBI single in her second trip to the plate in the same inning. It was Heim's first homer of the year and second of her career. She went 1-3 in game two, lifting her average to .267.
Senior catcher
Elena Koncar scored the eventual game winning run of game two in the bottom of the sixth inning after socking a double to the left center field gap with two outs. She scored on a single up the middle by sophomore
Carlie Hart. CSP tied the game earlier in the inning when senior second baseman
Emily Shinn lifted a sacrifice fly that tied the game, bringing home junior
Haley Schanks. Koncar went 2-3 with two runs in game two after going 2-2 with a walk and two runs in game one.
Adding to the senior day festivities was graduating junior
Sarah Kivisto going 1-2 with two walks and three runs in the first game and 2-3 with an RBI and a walk in game two. Shinn was 1-3 with a run in the first game and 1-2 with an RBI in game two.
A big highlight for the team was the play of freshman left fielder
Lily Langevin who didn't get out, going 5-5 with two runs and an RBI and is now hitting .326 in her rookie year.
Freshman right handed pitcher
Samantha Sullivan went the distance in the circle in game two to get the win, improving to 6-12. She allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and didn't issue any walks.
The Golden Bears close out their home slate tomorrow with a noon first pitch in a doubleheader against Northern State.
