Golden Bears close out inaugural season with gritty effort

Concordia falls 17-6 to UIndy in another hard fought DII competition

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (8-8) concluded its inaugural 2017 season with a 17-6 loss to the University of Indianapolis (9-4) on Friday evening at Sea Foam Stadium in the program's first outdoor game at the home stadium.

The Golden Bears cap off a successful first year with a .500 overall record and a 4-3 mark at home, going 4-2 in the Concordia Dome before tonight's first outdoor contest.

Freshmen Alina Boyce (2g, 1a) and Cassidy Leininger (1g, 2a) each had three point performances as five different players scored goals and four of the team's six goals were assisted.

It was Leininger's first three-point game and the first time she's scored and assisted in the same contest, with the two assists matching her season high. She finished her freshman year with four goals and five assists.

Boyce had 10 multi-goal performances on the season and had a goal and assist in half of the team's 16 games. She finished the year with 32 goals and nine assists (41 points) to finish third on the squad in goals and points.

This evening, the second year Greyhound program competing in the Great Lakes (GLIAC) jumped out to a strong start with the game's first five goals. Leininger scored on a pass from sophomore Sheala Osborne midway through the half to make it 5-1 before assisting Boyce on the team's second goal with 12:13 to play in the half to make it 7-2.

But CSP couldn't cut deeper into the Greyhound lead despite six first half free position shots, going 0-6 on those attempts.

The Golden Bears would go 2-4 on free position shots in the second half, but UIndy had already established a strong lead by that point. Concordia only allowed one first half free position shot for UIndy (1-1) before holding them to an 0-4 second half.

The Greyhounds entered the contest adept at maintaining long possessions to limit opponent chances as evidenced by a 335-209 shot margin in 12 prior contests - making a second half deficit a larger up hill climb for the young Golden Bears.

Tonight's shot chart mirrored UIndy's season total with the Greyhounds attempting 32 to CSP's 22.

In the net, freshman goalie Katie Lottsfeldt racked up nine more saves for a 133 total in her freshman year in which she played all but 20 minutes in the cage for the team. She also secured six ground balls and used her active play to intercept a pass for a caused turnover.

Freshmen Maya Hernandez and Brooke Genzler each had three ground balls, while junior Kallie LaValle and sophomore Sheala Osborne had five and four draw controls, respectively.

Hannah Burczyk led UIndy with five goals and an assist while Chalane Morrison had three goals and two assists.
